The glut of cheap natural gas and its impact on the power market simply made Vermont Yankee too expensive to run, said Entergy spokesman Jim Steets.

Researcher finds that poverty's 'cognitive cost' translates to as many as ten IQ points

Researcher finds that poverty's 'cognitive cost' translates to as many as ten IQ points | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it
For people struggling to live paycheck-to-paycheck, daily life can sometimes seem like a gauntlet of impossible-to-answer questions – Can I afford to put food on the table? Will I make rent this month?  What will happen if I lose my job? What if my kids get sick, or my car breaks down?

For many, those questions become so persistent it's hard to concentrate on anything else. And that's exactly the problem, says Harvard economist Sendhil Mullainathan.

India must stop viewing disasters as acts of God – report | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

India must stop viewing natural disasters as stand-alone acts of God or nature and recognise that its development policies are increasing the number of deaths and amount of devastation caused by such calamities, a new report says.

India must take a more holistic approach to natural disasters, focusing more on preparing for them and realising that work such as dam building, deforestation and unregulated building on riverbanks can worsen their impact...

Tesla Motors Changes Name To “Tuosule” In China

Tesla Motors Changes Name To “Tuosule” In China | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

Some people will do anything to make a buck, and trademark squatting is one way to make fast and easy money. Zhan Baosheng thought he could fleece Tesla Motors for $32 million by trademarking the “Tesla” name, so rather than pay up, Tesla will simply go by another name in China; “Tuosule,” the transliteration of the Tesla name in a dialect native to Hong Kong.

Telsa Motors has offered Baosheng $326,000 for him to release his rights to the “Tesla” name, just 1% of his absurd asking price of $32 million. The electric automaker is also taking Baosheng to court, arguing that despite launching a half-assed website, the Chinese trademark owner has no intention or ability to launch an all-electric vehicle. Baosheng trademarked the name back in 2006, before the Tesla Model S ever saw the light of day.

Hot Weather Energy Efficiency Tips | CleanTechies Blog - CleanTechies.com | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it
After a mild July and most of August, the hot weather associated with this time of year will finally make an appearance this week. In fact, we could hit an all-time peak load record today, and demand at least a couple of days this week. And although we don’t expect any problems meeting this demand, we’ve taken steps to continue to provide service without significant interruption – we have extra crews on stand-by should we experience any issues.

Ocean Acidification May Amplify Global Warming Up To 0.9°F

Ocean Acidification May Amplify Global Warming Up To 0.9°F | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

The oceans are now acidifying 10 times faster today than 55 million years ago when a mass extinction of marine species occurred. We are risking a marine biological meltdown “by end of century.”

But unrestricted carbon pollution doesn’t merely threaten to wipe out coral reefs, oysters, salmon, and other ocean species we rely on. Researchers find “Global warming amplified by reduced sulphur fluxes as a result of ocean acidification,” in a new Nature Climate Change study (subs. req’d).

As an accompanying news article in Nature explains:

"Efficiency advocates are trying many different approaches to solve this problem. A diverse coalition – including environmental NGOs, policymakers, building owners, contractors, utilities, and lenders – is working together to introduce new financing tools and address investor concerns, hoping to unlock what Deutsche Bank and the Rockefeller Foundation estimate to be a $279bn US market for energy-efficiency retrofits."

The Leveraged Buyout of America

The Leveraged Buyout of America | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

According to legal scholar Saule Omarova, over the past five years, there has been a “quiet transformation of U.S. financial holding companies.” These financial services companies have become global merchants that seek to extract rent from any commercial or financial business activity within their reach. They have used legal authority in Graham-Leach-Bliley to subvert the “foundational principle of separation of banking from commerce”...

'Jobless are not just statistics': Yellen wins support of US labour in Fed chair bid | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

Richard Trumka, president of America's largest federation of labour unions, the AFL-CIO, is supporting Janet Yellen over Larry Summers to succeed Federal Reserve chief Ben Bernanke, because of her call for central bank policies that aggressively pursue 'maximum employment.'

Referring primarily to the era of deregulation that led to the 2007 US housing bubble, burst, and subsequent financial crisis, Trumka called Yellen the "better candidate…when things were going wrong in the economy, in each of those instances, she predicted them accurately. Larry didn't."

In a call to action on the sorry comparative state of U.S. health, researchers at Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health are urging President Obama to "remove the public veil of ignorance" and confront a pressing question: Why is America at the bottom? The report, published in the journal Science, appeals to the President to mobilize government to create a National Commission on the Health of Americans. The researchers underscore the importance of this effort in order for the country to begin reversing the decline in the comparative status of U.S. health, which has been four decades in the making

Vicious Cycle: Extreme Climate Events Release 11 Billion Tons Of CO2 Into The Air Every Year | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

A major new study in Nature, “Climate extremes and the carbon cycle” (subs. req’d), points to yet another significant carbon cycle feedback ignored by climate models. The news release sums up the key finding of this 18-author paper: Researchers “have discovered that terrestrial ecosystems absorb approximately 11 billion tons less carbon dioxide every year as the result of the extreme climate events than they could if the events did not occur. That is equivalent to approximately a third of global CO2 emissions per year.”
