Pope Francis Just Made a Powerful Statement About Environmenal Pollution

Pope Francis Just Made a Powerful Statement About Environmenal Pollution | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

One of Pope Francis' biggest agenda items as the leader of the Catholic Church has been to promote preservation of the environment. The pontiff has been critical of the effects of industrialization on the environment and on Saturday renewed his call for an eco-conscious society.

"This is one of the greatest challenges of our time: To convert ourselves to a type of development that knows how to respect creation," the pope said in a speech at University of Molise, a school in southern Italy.

Most Canadians overvalue the contribution the oil sands industry make to the country’s economy, finding it hard to believe it only contributes 2% to Canada’s total Gross domestic Product (GDP), results of a recent poll published Friday show.

According to the survey conducted by polling firm Environics for the environmental group Environmental Defence, 57% of Canadians think the industry’s impact is larger than what Statistics Canada shows.

The study found that 41% of Canadians think the oil sands contribution to the world’s 11th largest economy is between 6 and 24 times higher than it actually is. Of those polled, 75% agree the country should shift its dependence on fossil fuels toward cleaner energy sources.

"The numbers speak for themselves. Canadians are clearly ready for a safer, cleaner, more prosperous energy future," Tim Gray, executive director of Environmental Defence, said in a statement.

Genetically Engineered Cotton Growers Want Unlicensed Pesticide Use on 3 Million Acres

A public interest group, representing environmental, public health, and organic farm interests, has asked the U.S. Environmental Protection (EPA) to deny an emergency request by Texas cotton growers to use a controversial pesticide on genetically engineered (GE) cotton to control weeds that are now resistant to the chemical they have been using, Roundup (glyphosate). Approximately 90% of cotton grown in Texas is genetically engineered or known as a genetically modified organism (GMO). The request, which comes through the Texas Department of Agriculture, seeks an allowance on 3 million acres for the highly toxic pesticide propazine, not registered for use on cotton.

Coastal winds intensifying with climate change, study says

Coastal winds intensifying with climate change, study says | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

Summer winds are intensifying along the west coasts of North and South America and southern Africa and climate change is a likely cause, a new study says.

Increasing winds and upwelling may increase nutrients in the lighted upper ocean, enhancing primary productivity, but excessive upwelling may increase turbulence, acidification and de-oxygenation of the photic zone. The ecological impacts of upwelling intensification are difficult to predict.

The problem is set to get worse, IFAW argues, because shipping lanes and humpback whale habitat directly overlap. Shipping passages through the reef are estimated to almost double by 2020 to around 8,500 transits a day, while the humpback whale population is growing at a rate of 11% a year.
