Toxic Algal Blooms And Warming Waters: The Climate Connection · EarthFix · Oregon Public Broadcasting | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

Every year during the warmer months, blooms of algae dot Northwest waters. Some types of algae can release toxins, which poison shellfish and the people who might eat those shellfish.

In recent years, toxic algal blooms have been more potent and lasted longer. That has scientists trying to understand how our warming climate could be contributing to the problem.

Climate Breakdown | George Monbiot

Climate Breakdown | George Monbiot | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

Already, a thousand blogs and columns insist that the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s new report is a rabid concoction of scare stories whose purpose is to destroy the global economy. But it is, in reality, highly conservative.

Reaching agreement among hundreds of authors and reviewers ensures that only the statements which are hardest to dispute are allowed to pass. Even when the scientists have agreed, the report must be tempered in another forge, as politicians question anything they find disagreeable: the new report received 1855 comments from 32 governments(1), and the arguments raged through the night before its launch(2).

In other words, it’s perhaps the biggest and most rigorous process of peer review conducted in any scientific field, at any point in human history.

IPCC Report Contains 'Grave' Carbon Budget Message | Climate Central

IPCC Report Contains 'Grave' Carbon Budget Message | Climate Central | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

The new IPCC report includes a budget for cumulative carbon emissions in order to avert "dangerous" climate change.

Within the voluminous report from the U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) published on Sept. 27 is a conclusion as sobering as any climate change warning to date.

The world is currently on track to emit enough greenhouse gases by about 2040 to exceed the globally agreed upon temperature target of 3.6°F (commonly referred to in international negotiations as the 2°C target), beyond which the risks of “dangerous” consequences of global warming escalate.

Can We Finally Have a Serious Talk About Population? : Climate Desk

Can We Finally Have a Serious Talk About Population? : Climate Desk | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

Today, as the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change releases its latest mega-report, averring a 95 percent certainty that humans are heating up the planet, there’s an unavoidable subtext: The growing number of humans on the planet in the first place.

The figures, after all, are staggering: In 1900, there were just 1.65 billion of us; now, there are 7.2 billion. That’s more than two doublings, and the next billion-human increase is expected to occur over the short space of just 12 years.According to projections, meanwhile, by 2050 the Earth will be home to some 9.6 billion people, all living on the same rock, all at once.
