This is scary reading and is at the extreme of climate change reporting. But it is possible. When I combine this with the rapid changes in communication and automation I feel that the current state of advanced education (beyond SPM) renders it a waste of time for  my grandchildren. It is training for jobs that won't exist. And, perhaps, society as we know it won't exist. Scary stuff. Trust in God. All others pay cash.

Oceans need saving before science is nailed : Nature News Blog | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

Don’t just gather data, do something. Scientists need to stop using a lack of knowledge as an excuse for not doing more to protect threatened species, a major gathering of marine conservationists has been warned.

“Science matters deeply, but we can’t let ourselves be trapped by the need to gather more data,” Amanda Vincent, a marine researcher at the University of British Columbia, told delegates at the opening of the International Marine Conservation Congress, which kicked off on 14 August in Glasgow, UK.

Fishermen try to rid Maine's Frenchman Bay of green crabs

Fishermen try to rid Maine's Frenchman Bay of green crabs | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it
Bangor, Maine (UPI) Aug 14, 2013 -
There's a new out-of-towner invading the coastal waters of Maine, and fishermen and conservationists are worried. Green crabs moved into Maine waters more than a century ago after arriving on the East Coast in the ballast water of ships from Europe, but their numbers have been growing in recent years. Scientists say warming ocean water has allowed them to move farther and farther north, multiplying along the way.
