Three Signs of Retreat in the Global War on Climate Change | The Nation

Three Signs of Retreat in the Global War on Climate Change | The Nation | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

In the carbon wars, big oil is winning.

Listening to President Obama’s State of the Union address, it would have been easy to conclude that we were slowly but surely gaining in the war on climate change. “Our energy policy is creating jobs and leading to a cleaner, safer planet,” the president said. “Over the past eight years, the United States has reduced our total carbon pollution more than any other nation on Earth.” Indeed, it’s true that in recent years, largely thanks to the dampening effects of the Great Recession, US carbon emissions were in decline (though they grew by 2 percent in 2013). Still, whatever the president may claim, we’re not heading toward a “cleaner, safer planet.” If anything, we’re heading toward a dirtier, more dangerous world.

China's Coal Bases: A Tour of the Largest Fossil Fuel Development Project in the World | InsideClimate News

China's Coal Bases: A Tour of the Largest Fossil Fuel Development Project in the World | InsideClimate News | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

China is building massive industrial complexes in its rural areas to convert coal to synthetic fuel that could make the air in its megacities cleaner.

Air pollution benefits aside, these so-called "coal bases" are the largest fossil fuel development in the world. The complexes use so much energy that the carbon footprint of the fuel they produce will be almost double that of conventional fuels, spelling disaster for the climate, scientists are warning.

Train Carrying Canadian Crude Derails & Leaks in Pennsylvania | InsideClimate News

Train Carrying Canadian Crude Derails & Leaks in Pennsylvania | InsideClimate News | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

A 120-car Norfolk Southern Corp train carrying heavy Canadian crude oil derailed and spilled in western Pennsylvania on Thursday, adding to a string of recent accidents that have prompted calls for stronger safety standards.

There were no reports of injury or fire after 21 tank cars came off the track at a bend by the Kiskiminetas River in the town of Vandergrift, according to town and company officials.

Nineteen of the derailed cars were carrying oil and two held liquefied petroleum gas, Norfolk Southern said. Three of the crude tank cars spilled after the incident, though the leaks have since been plugged. The company did not say how much oil spilled.

The train was heading from Conway to Morrisville, Pennsylvania. Some of the crude on board was destined for an asphalt plant in Paulsboro, New Jersey, owned by NuStar, a NuStar spokeswoman said.

Harper Govt Makes Moves to Silence Canada's Leading Environmental Groups | InsideClimate News | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

In both the United States and Canada, activism against tar sands, pipelines and climate change has soared in recent years.

But while President Obama has encouraged citizens to "stand up and speak up" to demand change on energy, Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper's administration has tried to silence critics of pro-tar sands policies.

In the most recent evidence, seven influential environmental organizations have become the subject of rigorous audits by the Canada Revenue Agency.

How Dark Money Flows Through the Koch Network

Fundraising by the libertarian billionaire brothers Charles and David Koch supports a tangle of nonprofits, sometimes referred to as the Kochtopus, all aimed at advancing conservative causes. Two groups, the Freedom Partners Chamber of Commerce and TC4 Trust, handed out almost $264 million from mid-2011 to October 2012 to 30 other nonprofits. Almost half of that went to the Center to Protect Patient Rights, which then funneled millions to a constellation of dark money groups, some of which also received money from Freedom Partners and TC4 Trust.

It actually costs more to buy a used Tesla Model S than a brand new one, thanks to its enormous popularity… and impatient rich people. After more than a year on the market, Tesla still can’t build enough Model S sedans to meet immediate demand. That’s a very good problem to have, as long as you’re not in the market for a used Model S.
