Time to change how the IPCC reports?

Time to change how the IPCC reports? | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

This week, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released the outcomes from Working Group I (WG-I) of the Fifth Assessment Report on the physical climate change. The IPCC has issued four previous assessments, in 1990, 1995, 2001 and 2007. Should there be another one in 2019? Or should IPCC reports evolve along with its findings and the state of the climate?

A case can be made that the IPCC should declare success and do things differently in future. There are some aspects of the IPCC process that should be retained, but theburden on the climate community in endlessly producing unfunded reports is too much. More importantly, society’s needs have changed.

Extreme weather 'keeps people poor'

Extreme weather 'keeps people poor' | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

New research suggests that extreme weather events will keep people poor in many parts of the world.

The authors argue that where disasters like drought are prevalent, they can be the most important cause of poverty.

They say that up to 325 million people will be living in countries highly exposed to natural hazards by 2030.

If aid is not used to reduce these risks, the progress made in fighting poverty could disappear.

The report has been compiled by the Overseas Development Institute.

Camryn Scott's curator insight, October 17, 2013 1:19 PM

I asumed that weather did effect poverty and now I know for sure. i can understand how weather can cause poverty. If there is a lot of earthquakes and huricanes millions of houses could be destroyed. Because the houses and buildings are destroyed the have to be rebuilt constantly and that takes time, money and resources.

Low Natural Gas Price to Hamper U.S. Energy Efficiency, IEA Says

Low natural gas prices will hamper the U.S.’s incentive to continue spending on energy-efficiency projects, according to the International Energy Agency.

Cheaper prices “make it more difficult to sustain and increase ratepayer spending levels as consumers see the energy efficiency surcharge on bills growing even as commodity costs are going down,” the Paris-based adviser to 28 developed nations said today in an e-mailed report. “This combination could create opposition by some utilities and regulators.”
