The Creeping Expansion of Corporate Civil Rights | Blog, Connecting the Dots | BillMoyers.com

The Creeping Expansion of Corporate Civil Rights | Blog, Connecting the Dots | BillMoyers.com | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

Civil rights for corporate "persons" often conflict with the public interest.

Last week, The Wire creator David Simon told Bill Moyers that the legal doctrine that spending money on political campaigns is an act of political speech protected by the First Amendment poses the greatest threat to American democracy. “That to me was the nail in the coffin,” he said. “If the combination of the monetization of our elections and gerrymandering create a bicameral legislature that doesn’t in any way reflect the will of the American people, you’ve reached the end game for democracy.”

He’s right. Not only does money as speech allow those with the fattest wallets to drown out the voices of average citizens, as John Light points out, it also gives wealthy donors an effective veto over policies that enjoy majority support. But it’s important to understand the other ways that the expansion of civil rights for corporations can conflict with the public interest.

99 Percent Of New Power Generation Added In January Came From Renewable Energy

99 Percent Of New Power Generation Added In January Came From Renewable Energy | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

Renewable energy continues to make major gains.

More than 99 percent of new electric capacity added in the U.S. in January came from renewable energy sources, according todata released by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) on Thursday.

Of the 325 megawatts of new capacity installed, solar led the way with 287 megawatts added in January. That was followed by geothermal power with three new units totaling 30 megawatts, one new unit of wind energy with an installed capacity of 4 megawatts, and three new units of biomass totaling 3 megawatts. In addition, there was 1 megawatt added that FERC defined as “other.”

Despite significant gains, renewables are still a relatively small piece of the overall capacity picture in America. Renewable sources, including hydro, account for just over 16 percent of total installed operating generating capacity, according to FERC  ...

Agricultural Population Growth Marginal as Nonagricultural Population Soars | Vital Signs Online | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

The global agricultural population—defined as individuals dependent on agriculture, hunting, fishing, and forestry for their livelihood—accounted for 37.6 percent of the world’s total population in 2011, the most recent year for which data are available.1 This is a decrease of 12 percent from 1980, when the world’s agricultural and nonagricultural populations were roughly the same size.2 Although the agricultural population shrunk as a share of total population between 1980 and 2011, it grew numerically from 2.2 billion to 2.6 billion people during this period, principally in Africa and Asia.3 (See Figure 1.)

In one room, talk of drastic emissions cuts. The other, oilsands at a crossroads.

A short stroll across the hall at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Chicago was a leap across a wide, wide, wide, philosophical chasm -- from a belief that humans can change, to one where they can't.

While one group of researchers explored the possibility of reducing greenhouse gas emissions 80 per cent by 2050, the other group took on the Canadian environment versus economydebate about the Alberta oilsands.

The Billionaires on Both Sides of Climate Change | Blog, Connecting the Dots | BillMoyers.com | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

It's the wealthy who hold the power to set the agenda.

The New York Times’ Nicholas Confessore recently reported that Tom Steyer, a billionaire former hedge fund manager, is campaigning to get President Obama to say no to the Keystone XL pipeline. He plans to spend $100 million (or more) during the 2014 midterm elections supporting candidates with strong environmental platforms and opposing politicians such as Florida Gov. Rick Scott who deny the reality of climate change. He hopes to raise $50 million from like-minded wealthy individuals to match $50 million of his own money. Confessore reports that Steyer, a Democrat, is hoping to build the prevention of climate change into an issue that all Americans will get behind.

First "orange" pollution alert as smog rolls into Beijing

First "orange" pollution alert as smog rolls into Beijing | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

Feb 21 (Reuters) - China's capital Beijing, under fire to take effective measures against air pollution, raised its four-tiered alert system to "orange" for the first time on Friday, as heavy smog was forecast to roll into the city over the next three days.

The orange level, the second highest, advises schools and kindergartens to cancel outside sports classes, but falls short of ordering school to close and keeping government vehicles off the road, provisions which come into force with the "red" level.

The alert was raised after the Beijing government faced criticism from state media and on the Internet for failing to act against high pollution levels last weekend.
