Pine smell 'limits' climate change

Pine smell 'limits' climate change | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

New research suggests a strong link between the powerful smell of pine trees and climate change.

Scientists say they've found a mechanism by which these scented vapours turn into aerosols above boreal forests.

These particles promote cooling by reflecting sunlight back into space and helping clouds to form.

Harsher penalties sought for sellers of killer chemical | Kingdom | Saudi Gazette | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

JEDDAH – Selling aluminum phosphide, a cheap and commonly used pesticide that can prove deadly if inhaled, is not a mere violation but a major crime because the deadly chemical can cause death to many, said Abdullah Al-Alyan, director of the Ministry of Labor’s Riyadh branch.

“The fines imposed on violators are not commensurate with the huge profits they make from selling this venomous compound. If the fines are not enough of a deterrent, violators will repeat the violation thinking that they can get away with paying a small fine,” Al-Alyan told Al-Eqtisadiah daily.

An oft-repeated maxim of foreign relations holds that “[n]ations do not have permanent friends or enemies. The link between Castle Bravo and modern environmentalism

The link between Castle Bravo and modern environmentalism | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it
Sixty years ago, in the predawn hours of March 1, 1954, a Japanese tuna boat named Daigo Fukuryu Maru (“Lucky Dragon no. 5”) was fishing near the Marshall Islands in the central Pacific. Its engine off, the ship drifted silently on a glassy sea. Overhead, the stars illuminated a few wandering clouds. Suddenly a blinding wall of light appeared on the western horizon. As the crew rushed on deck, the light changed from white to yellow, and then to orange and finally a deep red—a monster light that continued to grow and rise into the sky.

Going nuclear -- in a small way

New research has provided a comprehensive overview of new small-scale nuclear reactors, which could be suitable candidates to cope with the world’s ever growing demand for energy. According to official estimates world energy consumption in 2035 will be more than double that of 1995. A substantial challenge for engineers and scientists over the coming decades is to develop and deploy power plants with sufficient capacity and flexibility to meet this increasing need while simultaneously reducing emissions. The new article aims to show to what extent a new type of nuclear reactor, termed the 'Small Modular Reactor' (SMR), might provide a solution to fulfil these energy needs.
