Argentina explota a ciegas sus acuíferos | IPS Agencia de Noticias | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

Half of Argentina is invisible aquifer supplies that are crucial in arid and semi-arid, according to expert estimates. But Tierramérica found that nobody, not the government, know these resources for sure.

Beyond the Guarani Aquifer , a large underground fresh water system shared by Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay, little he knows of these resources in a country that has very visible water riches, like rivers of the Basin of the River Plate , Niagara Falls or the majestic glaciers of Patagonia.

The Guarani became notorious for a monitoring plan of the Global Environment Facility, "but in Argentina there are other aquifers that are exploited much more" and sustain regional economies, told Tierramérica in geology Dr. Ofelia Tujchneider, National University Littoral.

Rising number of U.S. homes at risk from wildfires -report | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

The number of homes at risk from wildfires in western U.S. states jumped 62 percent in the past year as more properties were developed in fire-prone areas, according to a report released on Thursday.

About 1.2 million homes valued at more than $189 billion are at high to very high risk from wildfires in California and a dozen other Western states, according to CoreLogic Inc, a data and analytics company.

The study comes near the close of a 2013 fire season that saw the most destructive fire in Colorado history, marked one of the largest burns on record in California, caused the deaths of 33 firefighters and strained U.S. Forest Service firefighting resources.

Argentina Blindly Exploiting Groundwater, Scientists Warn

Half of Argentina is supplied with water by invisible underground aquifers, which are crucial in the country’s arid and semi-arid regions, experts say. But Tierramérica discovered that nobody – not even the government – has any accurate scientific data on these groundwater reserves.

Beyond the Guaraní Aquifer, the vast underground body of fresh water shared by Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay, little is known about the groundwater reserves of this country with a wealth of highly visible water resources, including the rivers of the Rio de la Plata Basin, Iguazú Falls, and the majestic glaciers of Patagonia.

The Guaraní Aquifer became well known due to a monitoring plan funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF), “but in Argentina there are other aquifers that are exploited much more intensively” and support regional economies, said Ofelia Tujchneider, a geologist from the National University of the Littoral.
