NYC Is Swapping Out 250,000 Streetlight Bulbs With LEDs

NYC Is Swapping Out 250,000 Streetlight Bulbs With LEDs | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

The familiar yellow hues of New York City's street lights will, over the next four years, be replaced by stark, eco-friendly, LED bulbs. Thursday afternoon, Mayor Bloomberg, along with Transportation Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan, announced the plan to replace all 250,000 or so light bulbs in the city. "Using LEDs for street lighting is more than just a bright idea," Sadik-Khan said (in a worn-out pun). "It’s a necessity for sustainable cities to operate more efficiently while also delivering clearer, better quality light for New Yorkers."

Since LED lights last 20 years, compared to six years for the current high-pressure sodium lights, the administration claims the program will save the city $6 million in energy costs per year. Industry estimates are more conservative about the life-span for LEDs, putting it at 12 years. Still, the bulbs reduce energy consumption by 30% to 50% compared with the current bulbs. Additionally, the extended usage means fewer maintenance costs for city lamps. That should save the city $8 million in maintenance a year.

Despite all the environmental and financial benefits, some city dwellers might find the new look harsh. When Boston implemented a similar change, some residents complained. "It was like my eyes were busted," one agitated city dweller told the Boston Globe. Some Angelinos likened the new look to "floodlights." So brace yourselves, New Yorkers, for brighter lights, big city.

Concorso per “Un mondo come piace a te”. Il progetto Easyhome 4EQ tra i finalisti | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

Supercritical CO2 turbine for Power Production & Waste Heat Energy Recovery

A former scientist at Sandia National Lab is bringing the technology to market

>Because of its physical properties as a liquid, it has become a target fluid of opportunity to run turbines and thus make electricity. Steven Wright, Ph.D., who recently retired from Sandia National Laboratory (SNL), has set up a consulting company called Critical Energy LLC to bring this technology to a commercial level.

The objective of using supercritical CO2 (S-CO2) in a Brayton-Cycle turbine is to make it much more efficient in the transfer of heat. Wright points out that a steam turbine is about 33% efficient, but that an S-CO2 turbine could be as high as 48% efficient, a significant increase.

A closed loop supercritical CO2 system has the density of a liquid, but many of the properties of a gas. A turbine running on it, “is basically a jet engine running on a hot liquid,” says Wright.

“There is a tremendous amount of scientific and industrial interest in S-CO2 for power generation. All heat sources are involved...<

L'écovillage bâti à l'envers qui veut remettre le monde à l'endroit

L'écovillage bâti à l'envers qui veut remettre le monde à l'endroit | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

Electric Car Sales & Plug-in Hybrid Sales Growing Strong, And Why | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

The Union of Concerned Scientists’ Clean Vehicles program recently released an updated version of its rather comprehensive “backgrounder” on electric vehicles — “how much the technology is growing in the country, the opportunities it presents for consumers and automakers, and the challenges facing its adoption,” to be specific. Also included in the updated backgrounder is which automakers are now investing in EV technology.

Here are some of the key, overall findings:

The results showed that people who were more active on a daily basis had the lowest risk of a heart attack, but those who were merely active without exercising still had a lower risk than those doing nothing.

Being active reduced the risk of a heart attack or stroke by 27%, and death from any cause by 30%, during the 12-year study.

Fertilizers Are (Nearly) Forever: Scientific American Podcast

Without industrially created fertilizer, a third of the world's population would starve to death. Since Fritz Haber and Carl Bosch came up with a way a century ago to wrest nitrogen from the air and turn it into fertilizer for plants, food supplies have exploded.

But a lot of fertilizer applied to cropland simply washes off and fertilizes blooms of algae instead. When the bloom dies, other microbes move in to feast, in the process sucking all the oxygen out of the surrounding waters. The result: dead zones that lay waste to any sea life that could not flee. And such dead zones are proliferating.
