Dolphin-Killing Virus Spreads South, May Be Infecting Whales Too - Wired Science | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

A viral outbreak that’s killing bottlenose dolphins is moving down the U.S. East Coast as the animals migrate south for the winter. Between July 1 and November 3, at least 753 animals have died.

The outbreak began along the coast between New York and Virginia this summer. Now, carcasses are washing ashore in the Carolinas and Florida. Researchers have identified the cause as dolphin morbillivirus, a pathogen that’s related to human measles and canine distemper.

UK Proposed ban on Food Waste Landfill Disposal & Re-Purpose to Green Energy Feedstock

UK Proposed ban on Food Waste Landfill Disposal & Re-Purpose to Green Energy Feedstock | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it
Government, council and retailer-backed report says ban on landfill could save UK £17bn and heat 600,000 homes

Duane Tilden's curator insight, November 11, 2013 6:53 AM

>The ambition is to save the UK economy over £17bn a year through the reduction of food wasted by households, businesses and the public sector, preventing 27m tonnes of greenhouse gases a year from entering into the atmosphere.

The new study, Vision 2020: UK Roadmap to Zero Food Waste to Landfill is the culmination of more than two years' work and has the backing and input of local authority and industry experts. It sets the framework for a food waste-free UK by 2020.

Last week official figures revealed the average UK family was wasting nearly £60 a month by throwing away almost an entire meal a day. A report from the government's waste advisory group Wrap showed Britons were chucking out the equivalent of 24 meals a month, adding up to 4.2m tonnes of food and drink every year that could have been consumed. Almost half of this is going straight from fridges or cupboards into the bin, Wrap found. One-fifth of what households buy ends up as waste, and around 60% of that could have been eaten.

At the same time the UK's largest retailer, Tesco, recently agreed to reduce its multi-buy items and other promotions after revealing that 35% of its bagged salad was being thrown out. It also found that 40% of apples were wasted, and just under half of bakery items.<

Natural capital must be the way forward, says IUCN director general ("this is eco-economics 101")

Natural capital must be the way forward, says IUCN director general ("this is eco-economics 101") | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it
Ahead of the World Forum on Natural Capital, Tim Smedley speaks to Julia Marton-Lefèvre about the role of business in conservation

The Bonn Challenge, for example, is a commitment to restore 150m hectares of lost forests and degraded lands worldwide by 2020. In natural capital terms, this is estimated to be worth $85bn per year. "Degraded land has no economic value whatsoever", explains Marton-Lefèvre. "It arguably even has negative value because it takes up space in countries that could otherwise be used. If we restore it people can live there, farm and fish – it's the livelihood benefits that we have estimated would bring $85bn to countries. That doesn't even include the health benefits."

Marton-Lefèvre's favourite example of natural capital working in practice comes from Vietnam, where "planting and protecting nearly 12,000 hectares of mangroves cost just more than $1m but saved annual expenditures on dyke maintenance of well over $7m. And that only accounts for coast maintenance: mangroves are also nurseries for fish, meaning livelihoods for fishing and source of nutrients ... "

Camel tests positive for Mers virus

Camel tests positive for Mers virus | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

A camel has tested positive for the Sars-like virus that emerged in the Middle East last year and has killed 64 people worldwide.

The animal had been owned by a person diagnosed with Mers (Middle East respiratory syndrome) coronavirus, the Saudi health ministry said.

It remains unclear, however, if camels are responsible for passing the disease to humans.

Coronaviruses cause respiratory infections in humans and animals.

It is possible the virus is spread in droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes.

Should There be a Category 6 for Hurricanes?

Should There be a Category 6 for Hurricanes? | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

"Should there be a Category 6, or even a Category 7, to classify extra bit tropical cyclones like Haiyan? Some tropical cyclones labeled Category 5 are much stronger than others. It has been suggested that we would be smart to extend the system to have a Category 6 and maybe even a Category 7 to allow the additional severity of these storms to be indicated when they are being spoken of in the news or by officials in charge of scaring people into doing the right thing, like running away or staying indoors."

Stephane Bilodeau's curator insight, November 11, 2013 12:31 PM
