RECYCLING: The new alchemy? Company makes jet fuel and plastic soda bottles out of farm wastes -- Tuesday, November 4, 2014 -- www.eenews.net | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it
Last week, major players in the packaging industry expressed interest in helping the world get one step closer to a 100 percent renewable plastic product. While many have been working on the technology for several years, a level of 30 percent renewable had been reached. But a tiny company in Wisconsin, Virent Energy Systems Inc., has figured out how to generate the missing 70 percent, gaining the interest of a powerful group: the PlantPET Technology Collaborative.

A Gunpowder Plot Against Democracy | George Monbiot

A Gunpowder Plot Against Democracy | George Monbiot | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

This bill of rights for corporations will blow up the sovereignty of parliaments

By George Monbiot, published in the Guardian 5th November 2014

On this day a year ago, I was in despair. A dark cloud was rising over the Atlantic, threatening to blot out some of the freedoms our ancestors lost their lives to secure. The ability of parliaments on both sides of the ocean to legislate on behalf of their people was at risk from an astonishing treaty, that would grant corporations special powers to sue governments. I could not see a way of stopping it.

Almost no one had heard of the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) between the EU and the US, except those who were quietly negotiating it. And I suspected that almost no one ever would. Even the name seemed perfectly designed to repel public interest. I wrote about it(1) for one reason: to be able to tell my children that I had not done nothing.

Oil Price Slide - No Good Way Out

Oil Price Slide - No Good Way Out | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

The world is in a dangerous place now. A large share of oil sellers need the revenue from oil sales. They have to continue producing, regardless of how low oil prices go unless they are stopped by bankruptcy, revolution, or something else that gives them a very clear signal to stop. Producers of oil from US shale are in this category, as are most oil exporters, including many of the OPEC countries and Russia.

Inside Pakistan’s Untapped Fishing Industry | Inter Press Service

Inside Pakistan’s Untapped Fishing Industry | Inter Press Service | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

If you want to know what ‘sea traffic’ looks like, just go down to the Karachi Harbour. Built in 1959, the dockyard houses close to 2,000 big and small boats anchored in the grey sludge at the edge of Pakistan’s southern port city, which opens into the Arabian Sea.

Life on the jetty, an all-male domain, is anything but dull. The air is thick with the smell of fish. With anywhere from 100,000 to 150,000 men working here on a given day, mornings are crowded and noisy with vendors auctioning and buyers inspecting the catch.

In 1983, troubled by the high death rate in the oil field, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration set out to impose a set of worker safety rules on drilling companies. The effort backfired. And when that proposal died, drilling companies wound up exempt from a suite of basic worker protections.
