BMW i3 Commercials For Olympics Win Gold (4 VIDEOS) | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

"As you probably know, I love the BMW i3. It’s not the Model S, but it’s also a lot cheaper, and it’s still an amazing drive and I would say a “no-compromise” electric vehicle. That is, it’s better than any non-electric vehicle in my opinion."

Commentary: A 10-Year Oil Supply Retrospective Shows Unwarranted Optimism | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it
Without a serious revisiting of the questionable optimism that dominates any dialogue related to longer-term world oil supplies, without a harshly realistic scrub of the facts, we face unnecessarily large energy policy risks.

Carbon Conversion and Global Warming | The Energy Collective | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it
In 1990, President George H.W. Bush signed into law an amendment to the Clean Air Act that mandated emissions reductions of the harmful pollutant sulfur dioxide, SO2, from coal-fired power plants. The government did not instruct industry how to achieve the reductions, only that they were required to.

NREL: News - NREL Report Finds Similar Value in Two CSP Technologies

Findings demonstrate increasing importance for systems with thermal energy storageFebruary 11, 2014

Parabolic troughs and dry-cooled towers deliver similar value for concentrating solar power (CSP) plants, despite different solar profiles, a new report by the Energy Department’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory has found.

The report, “Estimating the Performance and Economic Value of Multiple Concentrating Solar Power Technologies in a Production Cost Model,” found that the value of delivered energy of dry-cooled tower and parabolic trough CSP plants, integrated with thermal energy storage, are quite similar.

CSP with thermal energy storage is a unique source of renewable energy in that the solar thermal energy can be dispatched in a similar manner as conventional thermal generation to respond to changes in supply or demand.

Bottom trawling: how to empty the seas in just 150 years

Bottom trawling: how to empty the seas in just 150 years | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

The government has refused to act against 'bottom trawling', which has turned Britain's seabed ecosystem into a wasteland.

"I believe there is not a portion of the ground but what the trawl destroys," explained G Cormack, a fisherman from Torry, Aberdeen. "I have dragged 50 miles off Aberdeen. I have got fast there and brought up coral about 2.5ft in circumference, lumps of soft coral, and I am prepared to say that whatever is in the way of the trawler will not escape."

It is a stark description of the damage inflicted by "bottom trawling", the practice of dragging heavily weighted nets across the seafloor to sweep up fish – like cod and haddock – that thrive there. And it is all the more alarming for having been voiced almost 150 years ago. Cormack was giving evidence in 1866 to a royal commission on the impact of bottom trawling, which expanded massively in British waters from the beginning of the 19th century.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- An evaluation three months before the Jan. 9 chemical spill found that chemical storage tanks at Freedom Industries did not meet industry standards, federal safety inspectors have found.

Tanks at the Elk River facility were "not necessarily in full compliance with" industry and federal government standards, the U.S. Chemical Safety Board said during testimony at a congressional field hearing on the spill.

Gyre Exhibition at the Anchorage Museum:

With stunning visual impact and an astonishing array of ocean trash, internationally recognized artists create works of art for this exhibition from debris collected from beaches around the world. Plastic packaging in a throwaway culture finds its way into our ocean biosphere and then into the hands of artists. Our oceans and beaches are awash in plastic pollution propelled by gyre (rotating ocean currents). The exhibition explores the relationship between humans and the ocean in a contemporary culture of consumption.

China says gets tough on polluters, nixes projects worth $19.5 bln

China says gets tough on polluters, nixes projects worth $19.5 bln | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

China's environmental watchdog vetoed as many as 32 projects with a total investment of 118.4 billion yuan ($19.5 billion) last year as it stepped up efforts to get tough on industrial polluters, a senior official said on Tuesday.

Zhai Qing, the vice-environment minister, told reporters his ministry was working to improve its environmental assessment capabilities and strengthen its powers to monitor and punish polluters.

"I think our ability to enforce and monitor is extremely important... and since last year, we have been constantly trying to strengthen our abilities," he added.

Beijing is under intense pressure to clean up its heavily polluted air, water and soil in the face of mounting public anger, but enforcement has been identified as one its biggest challenges, with the Ministry of Environmental Protection (MEP) struggling to find the clout to take on powerful industrial interests and growth-obsessed local authorities.

Gas Networks Are Now Threatened By Solar

Gas Networks Are Now Threatened By Solar | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

Originally published on RenewEconomy.
Australia’s energy utilities have added a new element to their push for solar incentive schemes to be removed, arguing that gas networks now face the same threat as the nation’s network of poles and wires – a “death spiral” scenario where rising costs push consumers to consider other technologies.

The Energy Network Association – which represents the distribution and transmission networks in the electricity and gas markets – has called on the federal government to remove the small-scale renewable energy scheme, which provides certificates for rooftop solar PV, and solar hot water systems, as well as heat pumps.

Kraft Singles to lose artificial preservatives

Kraft Singles to lose artificial preservatives | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it
NEW YORK (AP) â€" Kraft is removing artificial preservatives from its most popular Singles cheese product variety, in the latest sign that companies are tweaking recipes as food labels come under greater scrutiny. Kraft's decision comes as a growing number of Americans pay closer attention to what they eat and try to stick to foods they feel are natural. Last week, for instance, Subway said it was removing a chemical from its bread after a popular food blogger named Vani Hari started a petition noting the ingredient is also used in yoga mats. The new Kraft packages, which began appearing on supermarket shelves in recent weeks, also come stamped with a red circle noting they have no artificial preservatives or flavors.
