AWAY from the political circus of the 24-hour news cycle, Australia remains a profoundly unequal society. However, the old political language of class struggle is meaningless to most Australians. Today, many conflicts are expressed in populist rhetoric, whether it is the racism and climate scepticism of radio shock jocks, Wayne Swan's criticism of mining billionaires, or the Occupy movement's slogan of the 1 per cent versus the 99 per cent.
Importantly, populist responses are expressions of the larger conflict between supporters of two competing but flawed models of capitalism.
