Saving the ozone layer and the climate

Saving the ozone layer and the climate | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

Although reducing emissions of carbon dioxide is essential if climate change is to be slowed and then halted in the long run, researchers are analyzing a number of alternative pathways for reducing human-related forcing on climate over the next few decades. These analyses focus on reductions in the emissions of other gases and particles. For example, a 2012 paper by Drew Shindell of the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies and a host of co-authors examines various means for slowing near-term changes in climate while also improving air quality by controlling emissions of methane and black carbon, or soot.

Tomgram: Pepe Escobar, The Tao of Containing China | TomDispatch

Yes, the predictions are in.  By 2016 (or 2030?), China will have economically outpaced the U.S.  So say the economic soothsayers.  And behind them lie all those, in the Pentagon and elsewhere in Washington, who secretly fear that, if nothing is done to contain it, China will within decades be dominant in the Pacific, the overlord of Asia, and perhaps later in the century the -- to steal a phrase -- “sole superpower” of planet Earth.

House Spending Panel Votes to Gut Clean-Energy Research - ScienceInsider

House Spending Panel Votes to Gut Clean-Energy Research - ScienceInsider | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives made manifest yesterday how much they dislike President Barack Obama's clean-energy agenda as a House spending panel voted for massive cuts in clean-energy research.

The Subcommittee on Energy and Water Development, and Related Agencies, a part of the House Appropriations Committee, passed its markup of the proposed budget for fiscal year 2014, which begins on 1 October. In its version of the budget, the subcommittee would slash spending on the Department of Energy's (DOE's) Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) from the current level of $252 million to just $50 million, an 80% cut. Kick-started in, ARPA-E aims to quickly develop the most promising results from basic research to a point at which private industry can take them over. The Obama administration had requested a boost for ARPA-E to $379 million. The subcommittee would also chop back funding for DOE's work on renewable energy by 50% to $983 million, according to a subcommittee press release.

Climate change: Corporate sustainability in the supply chain | Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists

Traditionally, corporate sustainability efforts have focused on the direct impacts of a company’s waste or the emissions associated with its operations, buildings, and vehicles. However, the majority of the US economy’s climate, water, and pollution impacts are the result of complex supply chains, strung together to deliver value-added products and services. To mitigate these indirect impacts (by reducing greenhouse gas emissions, for example) and adapt to new risks, leading companies must engage with upstream suppliers and embed sustainability as a joint objective. Companies failing to do so may suffer damage to their reputations and operations.

Nuclear aging: Not so graceful | Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists

Nuclear aging: Not so graceful | Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

The abandonment of aging nuclear reactors—most prominently reactors that need repairs, as is the case atSan Onofre in California and Crystal River in Florida, but also at some plants that have simply become uneconomic to operate, like Kewaunee in Wisconsin—has huge implications for resource-acquisition decisions. As the US nuclear fleet ages and the “nuclear renaissance” ballyhooed over the last decade fades into history, having failed to deliver on its promises, these early retirements will be closely scrutinized in regard to decisions about both old and new reactors.
