I think it's very interesting that people in Argentina are protesting nuclear power and the disaster in Japan.  It makes me feel like we're all together in what happens in the world.  The article also says that the protesters were beaten.  I don't think that should have happened.  Governments need to be very clear with their people as to what is going on.  Even though this doesn't take place in the US, it can affect us.

A New York Times Column on Climate and Energy By ANDREW C. REVKIN

A New York Times Column on Climate and Energy By ANDREW C. REVKIN | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

A lot of smart people are coming to see the energy problem as the defining challenge of the 21st century. We have to supply power and transportation to an eventual population of 10 billion people who deserve decent lives, and we have to do it while limiting the emissions that threaten our collective future.

Yet we have already poured so much carbon dioxide, the main greenhouse gas, into the atmosphere that huge, threatening changes to the world’s climate appear to be inevitable. And instead of slowing down, emissions are speeding up as billions of once-destitute people claw their way out of poverty, powered by fossil fuels.

Why We Can’t Shop Our Way to a Real Economy

Why We Can’t Shop Our Way to a Real Economy | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

UTNE READER by Stacy Mitchell TEXxTalk

Wresting control of the real economy from corporate banks, commodity crops, and big-box retail means reversing policies that concentrate power at the top.

Many people are beginning to change where they shop and what they buy and where they do their banking, but a purely consumer-based response to this problem, on its own, is not likely to get us where we need to go.

Elon Musk: I can fix Boeing's battery problem | GizMag.com

Elon Musk: I can fix Boeing's battery problem | GizMag.com | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

Elon Musk says he's still waiting for a call from Boeing to fix the jumbo jet maker's overheating Dreamliner battery problem. For the past few months, Boeing's 787 fleet has been grounded in the United States following a lithium-ion battery that caught fire in flight. The National Transportation Safety Board was unable to determine the cause of the fire, but the Tesla and SpaceX CEO says the problem is clear to him, and he's willing to "do the fix" for Boeing.

Musk first made his desire to help his competitor in the commercial space race known on Twitter in January, and over the weekend during his keynote at the South By Southwest Interactive festival in Austin, Texas, he said he's still waiting for Boeing to respond to his offer.

Musk told the audience he was sincere in his offer of assistance and didn't mean it as an attack on Boeing. In fact, what followed was a brief primer a la Musk on lithium battery technology that sounded more like a sales pitch from a guy who would be happy to ink a new contract with a major manufacturer.

Decade-Long Study Confirms Significant Public Health Advantages Of Walkability

Decade-Long Study Confirms Significant Public Health Advantages Of Walkability | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

A new decade-long study from the University of Melbourne has found that when the overall walkability of an area is increased, simply put, people walk more, even well after the “novelty” may have worn off, and their health and wellbeing is improved as a result. This is the first study to provide long-term evidence of the effect that local walkability has on the health of people.

'Tind' Prefab Houses by Stockholm-based Design Studio Claesson Koivisto Rune

'Tind' Prefab Houses by Stockholm-based Design Studio Claesson Koivisto Rune | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

Stockholm-based studio claesson koivisto rune have has created 3 sleek typologies for prefabricated homes that draw from the distinctly scandinavian landscape and approach to efficient living.

The 'Tind' residences draw their name from the norwegian word for 'mountain peak', a concept informed by the remarkable lack of sharp pointed peaks in scandinavian mountain systems. The softened edges of the range lend the landscape a particular beauty that finds its way into the architecture in the form of a truncated, single pitch roof. Floor-grazing windows are relegated to major walls and all apertures lie flush with light-drenched interiors. Rather than a perforated volume, the home is a rhythmic composition of built material and void, and despite the various models of kit houses, every interior is organized by a central entrance way or staircase and seeks to blur notions of interior and exterior.

While prefabricated homes have many historical iterations, the architectural integrity of the 'Tind' series is preserved through culturally relevant approaches to living...
