Critics of solar and wind power often point out they are intermittent power sources, and they are correct about that. Cloudy and still days mean low or no energy and that is the major drawback of solar and wind power.

How Solar-Based Microgrids Could Bring Power to Millions | MIT Technology Review

How Solar-Based Microgrids Could Bring Power to Millions | MIT Technology Review | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it
Millions of the world's poorest lack power. Microgrids could be a clean-energy solution.

" Worldwide, one and a half billion people lack electricity, most of them rural dwellers. (In India, for example, 268 million people are without electricity in rural areas, but only 21 million in cities.) The International Energy Agency says the type of power plant installed at Batu Laut, known as a hybrid microgrid, will be essential to bringing power to many of them. That's because connecting a remote community to the conventional power grid, with its large, centralized plants, is expensive and can take more than a decade. In some cases, geography and economics may never permit access to the grid. Hybrid microgrids can provide dependable electricity by intelligently combining power from multiple local sources, and building them is far cheaper and faster than extending the grid to the areas where most of the people without electricity live. "

The Valatie Free Library is a small library with plans to make a big difference. The threshold for defining a “small library” in the United States, according to LJ’s Best Small Library in America Award, is a library serving fewer than 25,000 people. The Valatie Free Library serves just over 4300 people and currently does so in a 750 square foot library building. Now that’s small!

Prosperity Index Shows Capitalism Kills

Prosperity Index Shows Capitalism Kills | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it
Bullion Bulls Canada - BBC - Gold | Silver | Precious Metals | Mining Stocks, Information, Due Diligence, Research, Quotes, News.

The Legatum Institute recently released their 2012 “prosperity index”, its annual ranking of the well-being of the world’s nations. One might argue that mere economic prosperity is a very simplistic benchmark by which to rank nations, which is why it’s notable that this index is a much broader gauge than mere economic factors.

The Institute states that it’s rankings are derived from eight, separate categories of sub-rankings:

1) Economy

2) Education

3) Social capital

4) Safety and security

5) Opportunity

6) Personal freedom

7) Health

8) Governance

This makes this assessment both more interesting and more useful/meaningful. The term “prosperity index” clearly understates the scope of this ranking, and referring to it as a “quality of life index” might be more accurate (if slightly more cumbersome). Perhaps more importantly, as the Legatum Institute points out itself; these rankings provide an excellent insight into which nations are most likely to prosper tomorrow.

I must admit that I was not surprised that this op-ed from a Conservative coming out in support of Obamacare got so very little coverage in the mainstream media. After-all our Plutocracy has no desire to have an objectively informed populace as ignorance is the easiest way to keep a people oppressed and enslaved by their own choice.
J.D. Kleinke is a resident fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, a former health care executive and the author of the novel “Catching Babies.” The American Enterprise Institute is a conservative think tank that was founded in 1943. As such, he does not have a liberal bone in his body.

Kite power getting off the ground in Germany | gizmag.com | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

Despite offering numerous advantages over its rotating brethren, most notably the ability to reach the high-speed winds found at higher altitudes, kite-based energy systems are yet to really get off the ground in a meaningful way. But things are looking up. Earlier this year, NASA revealed it is investigating ways to improve the aerodynamics and autonomous flight control of kites for power generation applications, and now Berlin-based wind energy developer NTS GmbH has teamed with the Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Engineering and Automation (IPA) to make their own kite energy system concept a reality.
