Nigeria, junkyard of 22,000 tonnes of banned pesticides, say experts

OVER 22,000 tonnes of obsolete pesticides that have been banned worldwide by the United Nations, its agencies, international and government institutions are found in Nigeria, endangering the lives of human beings, animals and the ecosystem.

Even worse is misuse of these chemicals, and ignorance on the part of importers and users have led to no fewer than 220,000 fatalities every year.

Experts believe that Nigeria needs about $17 million to clear the mess of the stockpile of these obsolete chemicals, which are either used for agricultural or industrial purposes.

Climate Code Red: Stop tailoring global warming scenarios to make them “politically palatable” says leading climate scientist

Climate Code Red: Stop tailoring global warming scenarios to make them “politically palatable” says leading climate scientist | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

Note from CCR: Readers of this blog will be familiar with the work of Prof. Kevin Anderson, one of the world's most forthright climate scientists, including in 4 degrees hotter: an adaptation trap?, Climate Change: Going Beyond Dangerous, andScientists call for war on climate change, but who on earth is listening?  Anderson's approach is reflected in the framing of the forthcoming Radical Emission Reduction Conference in December 2013. The conference rationale sums up our dilemma neatly: "Today, in 2013, we face an unavoidably radical future. We either continue with rising emissions and reap the radical repercussions of severe climate change, or we acknowledge that we have a choice and pursue radical emission reductions: No longer is there a non-radical option

Outside View: When governments become destructive

Outside View: When governments become destructive | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

July Fourth, marks the United States' Independence Day. The central celebrated document, the Declaration of Independence, that rejected British rule, was the masterpiece of democratic expression written by Thomas Jefferson in 1776.

The most profound lines aren't the more famous "When in the course of human events" or "all men are created equal" but rather appear at the end of the first sentence of the document's second paragraph: "when ... government ... becomes destructive, it is the right of the people to alter or abolish it and institute new government."

how-steel-changed-the-world.jpg (579x6694 pixels) | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

Since the beginning of the industrial age steel has been an essential building material. Today China is by far the largest consumer of the iron-based commodity. In 1943 the world was producing under 400 million tonnes of steel but global production has sky rocketed since – in  2009 the world produced nearly 1.6 billion tonnes.
