Xcel Colorado sets U.S. record with over 60% wind energy | REVE

Xcel Colorado sets U.S. record with over 60% wind energy | REVE | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

It’s been a while since this happened (May 24, actually), but it’s never been previously reported, and impressive enough that we don’t want to let it go without a mention: Xcel Energy’s Colorado system has topped its old hourly penetration record for wind (56.7%), reaching 60.5% between 1 and 2 a.m. local time on that date.

During that hour, wind power supplied 1,874 megawatts (MW) of a total load of 3,100 MW, according to an e-mail we just received from an Xcel Energy official.

Mitsubishi To Introduce 3 Hybrids (2 Plug-in Hybrids) At Tokyo Motor Show

Mitsubishi To Introduce 3 Hybrids (2 Plug-in Hybrids) At Tokyo Motor Show | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

Mitsubishi Motor Corporation will introduce three hybrid vehicles at the Tokyo Motor Show. Two of them are plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) and another is a regular hybrid.

BYD Hits California Speed Bumps | Alternative Energy Stocks

BYD Hits California Speed Bumps | Alternative Energy Stocks | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

After a year of relative calm in which its shares have surged, electric vehicle (EV) aspirant BYD (OTC: BYDDF; HKEx: 1211; Shenzhen: 002594) is once embroiled in a couple of mini-scandals involving its labor practices and technology in California. While I doubt that either of these problems will have a long-term impact on the company, they do highlight the many speed bumps that BYD and other Chinese automakers will face as they move into the global marketplace. The risks are particularly high for BYD, which is 10 percent owned by billionaire investor Warren Buffett, since the company is relying heavily on global markets to fuel its EV business.

Public Utilities And The Necessity For Change

Public Utilities And The Necessity For Change | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

On page 4 of an Edison Electric Institute (EEI) booklet called Disruptive Challenges: Financial Implications and Strategic Responses to a Changing Retail, “Distributed Energy Resources” (meaning Rooftop solar) is identified as “the largest near-term threat to the utility model.” Though the impact of this “disruptive technology” is still small, (p 13) “… the potential impact, based upon DER trends, is considerable (as stated earlier, industry projections propose that 33 percent of the market will be in the money for DER by 2017, assuming current tax and regulatory policies).”
