True collaboration is hard work but a small group of systems thinkers, mappers and innovators could make all the difference.. The reason systems experts are so valuable is that they not only understand the inter-connection of issues, important in itself, but also recognise the power of group dynamics and of finding ways to encourage groups with competing interests to find common ground.... ...we need to recognise we don't really understand any more the complexity of the current system, or how it dynamically evolves over time. We also have no prototypes for an alternative system so have no clear sense of where we are exactly aiming for.... http://www.guardian.co.uk/sustainable-business/blog/systems-experts-scale-and-speed-sustainability

The Ogallala Aquifer suffered its second-worst drop since at least 2000 in a 16-county swath of the Texas Panhandle, new measurements show. With the drought showing little sign of abating, farmers face another tough year.
SustainOurEarth's insight:
The Ogallala Aquifer is a fossil water aquifer that formed over geologic time, and will only recovery over geologic time. When farmers use it up it, for all intensive purposes, it is finished. It has taken farmers only about a hundred years using intensive irragation in the southern parts of the aquifer to drain what took millions of years to form. Now, oil and gas production companies want to tap into the aquifer to aquire water for "fracking". The future of the mid section of the US is likely reverting to prarie, assuming enough rainfall, or converting to desert. Either way it will be a lot less productive with out the water and ability to irrigate crops. Delete the scoop?

Working in conjunction with the Technical University of Munich, industrial and electric power giant Siemens has determined that Europe is incorrectly siting its renewable power projects -- and wasting an estimated 45 billion euros in the process. Siemens claims the projects should be shifted to locations with higher yields, calling the choice of site "crucial to the efficiency and economy." Via Hans De Keulenaer Delete the scoop?

Marian Locksley's curator insight,
As such, development of the Russian Arctic shelf has not begun, and the most important water artery in the Murmansk Region, Kola Bay, is covered with oil film that is so thick that it is easily visible to satellites. And what to do with these slicks so as to stem further pollution – this is a question that remains without a clear answer. As a result, there is already a deepening problem of hydrocarbon build ups in enormous quantities along the sea floor of Kola Bay. These are the same petroleum products spilled by vessels who opted to hush them up to evade responsibility. As a consequence the oil is just coating the bottom of the sea. Delete the scoop?

The chasm between science and society is wide and deep, illustrated most recently by events in climate science1and calls for increasingly politicized management of NSF-funding2. Scientists tend to blame it on society, but scientists also share the blame2. It is thus essential that the scientific community—and scientists as individuals—begin to re-think our approach to doing science. This is particularly salient for biologists who study how natural systems work, given the widespread influence of human activities on Earth’s life-support systems and the profound dependence of humanity on other living things.
