Stupidity Is Not A Valid Defense For Us - The Automatic Earth

Stupidity Is Not A Valid Defense For Us - The Automatic Earth | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

If we can't plead stupidity, what else is there? How do we live with ourselves? Is it all the stuff we buy that manages to numb our brains and consciences?

When I see a headline like this one at Bloomberg today, World Needs Record Saudi Oil Supply as OPEC Convenes, there’s just one thought that pops into my head: what the world needs is for us to stop doing this thing we’re doing. Even apart from peak oil concerns, it’s obvious we’re going to run out at some point or another, and it doesn’t matter whether that’s tomorrow or at some other point in the future, though we do know it’s not going to take another 100 years, or even 50.

And nothing will ever take the place of oil; once those unique carbons are gone, that’s it, we’ll have to find a completely different way of running our societies, and if we’re not smart enough to prepare for that beforehand, we’ll be cats fighting in a sack and use the last scraps to kill off each other. And our legacy won’t be the Greek thinkers and Picasso and Dostoyevsky and Walt Whitman and Maria Callas, since there won’t be the means for our children anymore to share what makes man great between them. Our main legacy will instead be bloodshed, we will have gone the exact same path that any non-thinking or even primitive organism would have taken, who don’t have opera or philosophy or poetry to their name.

Detroit cuts off water for families

Detroit cuts off water for families | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

For months, thousands of families in Detroit have been living without water.

It is not because of natural disaster, but because of a controversial decision by the city to enforce bans for those who do not pay their bills.

But the plight of those without water - already among the poorest residents of any major city in America - is getting national and even international attention from human rights groups.

Climat : le moment « Oh merde! »

Climat : le moment « Oh merde! » | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

Sustainable Design: The Holcim Foundation Names 13 Winners in North America

Sustainable Design: The Holcim Foundation Names 13 Winners in North America | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it
The triennial competition awarded $330,000 to projects that the design jury determined as pushing the envelope of sustainability.

Because the cutting edge in sustainable design is constantly edging forward, building technologies that were deemed innovative a decade ago have become standard in architecture. To celebrate the latest thinking in design performance and efficiency, the Holcim Foundation for Sustainable Construction, based in Zurich, Switzerland, announced the recipients of its 2014 Holcim Awards for North America on Sept. 18. About 250 people attended the awards ceremony, which was held in the Evergreen Brick Works event space—itself a 2008 Holcim Acknowledgement prize winner—in Toronto.

À Chicago, le restaurant qui a produit 30 litres de déchets en 2 ans | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

À Chicago, Justin Vrany a fait de son restaurant « Sandwich me in » un véritable exemple à suivre pour ses collègues du monde entier. Pourquoi ?

Análisis costo beneficio de energías renovables no convencionales en Colombia | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

(FEDESARROLLO, 2013)

Even though this type of power generation plant is otherwise viable, environmentalists have raised an alarm. They say these plants in Delhi “are posing threat to environment for want of proper pollution control mechanism”.
