Food Fraud: 10 Counterfeit Products We Commonly Consume

Food Fraud: 10 Counterfeit Products We Commonly Consume | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

Coffee, olive oil and fish are just some of the adulterated and intentionally mislabeled foods regularly passed off as something they’re not.

In a country where we have relatively strict labeling regulations, many food manufacturers still manage to swindle shoppers by adding fillers or diluting the real deal with less expensive ingredients, without the knowledge of the consumer. And in fact, it’s become so prevalent that the U.S. Pharmacopeial Convention, a nonprofit that sets standards used by the FDA, set up a database to track the infractions. Called the Food Fraud Database (FFD), it describes food fraud as the "deliberate substitution, addition, tampering or misrepresentation of food, food ingredients or food packaging, or false or misleading statements made about a product for economic gain." It has a shocking number of entries.

This seems to be happening quite frequently in order to cut production and manufacturing costs and the consumer is the one that loses out

Good catches. Best advice: be discerning when you shop. Read labels carefully. Buy organic. Do research on brands you're not familiar with. Purchase fresh foods as often as possible. You can make your own orange juice.

Infographic: The Impact Of EV Solar Charging Stations

Infographic: The Impact Of EV Solar Charging Stations | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

There are more benefits to driving a solar charged vehicle than meets the eye.

As technology for these vehicles improve, so will their travel distance and accessibility, as charging stations are becoming more common, with locations at airports, malls, and even college campuses.

Electric vehicles are good for the environment, and recent studies have shown they also play a role in our health.

This infographic outlines their benefits, compares emissions from the different types of charging stations, maps locations across the US, and summarizes the positive impact electric vehincles have on the economy, environment and our health.

Science Has Created a Substitute for Breathing

Science Has Created a Substitute for Breathing | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it
A single intravenous injection of a lipid-based gas-filled solution brought 15 minutes worth of life-saving oxygen to rabbits with completely blocked airways.

PROBLEM: Patients who can't breathe need oxygen quickly to avoid cardiac arrest and brain injury. Unfortunately, attempts in the early 1900s to intravenously supply this essential gas failed to oxygenate the blood and often caused dangerous air bubbles. Current treatments, such as blood substitutes, breathing masks, and tubes, aren't always effective as well since they still rely on the lungs to function or require time to properly administer. . . .

Brilliant research. Hopefully it is being trialled in humans.

Green and Healthy Buildings: monitoring consumption & ecology in the built environment

Green and Healthy Buildings: monitoring consumption & ecology in the built environment | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

According to the United Nations Environment Programme, buildings account for approximately 40 percent of worldwide energy use and are responsible for 30 percent of greenhouse gas emissions. They also play an important role in the health and wellbeing of those who inhabit them each day.

The mass of information about what makes a building green tends to concentrate on new and innovative designs that create beautiful photo spreads. While such examples are inspiring, they make up a very small percentage of all buildings in operation.

Green Buildings Alive is an environmental initiative aimed at collecting and sharing data on existing buildings between 10 and 60 years old. The data is collected from office towers in Australian Central Business Districts (CBDs) and shared on a public website.
