Stupidity Is Not A Valid Defense For Us - The Automatic Earth

Stupidity Is Not A Valid Defense For Us - The Automatic Earth | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

If we can't plead stupidity, what else is there? How do we live with ourselves? Is it all the stuff we buy that manages to numb our brains and consciences?

When I see a headline like this one at Bloomberg today, World Needs Record Saudi Oil Supply as OPEC Convenes, there’s just one thought that pops into my head: what the world needs is for us to stop doing this thing we’re doing. Even apart from peak oil concerns, it’s obvious we’re going to run out at some point or another, and it doesn’t matter whether that’s tomorrow or at some other point in the future, though we do know it’s not going to take another 100 years, or even 50.

And nothing will ever take the place of oil; once those unique carbons are gone, that’s it, we’ll have to find a completely different way of running our societies, and if we’re not smart enough to prepare for that beforehand, we’ll be cats fighting in a sack and use the last scraps to kill off each other. And our legacy won’t be the Greek thinkers and Picasso and Dostoyevsky and Walt Whitman and Maria Callas, since there won’t be the means for our children anymore to share what makes man great between them. Our main legacy will instead be bloodshed, we will have gone the exact same path that any non-thinking or even primitive organism would have taken, who don’t have opera or philosophy or poetry to their name.

Yakima Herald Republic | Take steps to assure safety of oil trains

Outside of the fluctuating price of gasoline and general outrage over petroleum spills, oil industry issues don’t get much notice in Washington state, whether from residents or regulators. But in recent years, derailments of trains hauling crude oil elsewhere have called attention to the increasing number of oil trains that are traversing our state, and those numbers will increase in the future. The public needs to be aware of this development, and regulators and first responders — firefighters, police and other emergency personnel — need the tools to assure the safety of our citizenry.

The most recent high-profile derailment occurred last month, when more than 100 cars carrying crude from the Bakken fields of North Dakota went off the tracks in West Virginia. The derailment caused multiple explosions that nearby residents likened to “a biblical judgment.” The accident caused no deaths, but hundreds of people were evacuated, and oil leaked into a nearby river tributary, threatening the area’s water supply.

IOC President Thomas Bach came to Rio de Janeiro to laud the city's progress in getting ready for the 2016 Olympics. On Saturday, he came up against another side of the games - activists bursting into his hotel lobby to protest what they call environmental destruction brought on by the games. As Bach and his executive board were wrapping up a 2 1/2-day meeting in Rio, a small group of protesters gathered outside the luxury hotel at Copacabana Beach holding signs that read ''Thomas Bach is a natu

The Closed Minds Problem

The Closed Minds Problem | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

How do you deal with Rick Santelli and Allan Meltzer?

When I was a young economist trying to build a career, I lived — or thought I lived — in a world in which ideas and those who championed them met in relatively open intellectual combat. Of course there were people who clung to their prejudices, of course style sometimes trumped substance. But I believed that by and large better ideas tended to prevail: if your model of trade flows or exchange rate fluctuations tracked the data better than someone else’s, or resolved puzzles that other models couldn’t, you could expect it to be taken up by many if not most researchers in the field.

This is still true in much of economics, I believe. But in the areas that matter most given the state of the world, it’s not true at all.

Peak What? | Do the Math

Peak What? | Do the Math | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

Let’s not get confused, people. Earth is finite (and other planets are mostly in hostile environments and in any case rendered immaterial by unfathomable remoteness). The resources are finite. One-time consumables will peak in their use one way or another: they must do so—either by depletion or by voluntary reduction in use. Estimating timescales is the tricky part. But do I still believe in peak oil? As surely as I believe we landed on the Moon.

What about timescales: do I believe we are likely to see peak oil in the next decade or so? I do still think this is likely: a point of view based on more than stubbornness.
