Stupidity Is Not A Valid Defense For Us - The Automatic Earth

Stupidity Is Not A Valid Defense For Us - The Automatic Earth | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

If we can't plead stupidity, what else is there? How do we live with ourselves? Is it all the stuff we buy that manages to numb our brains and consciences?

When I see a headline like this one at Bloomberg today, World Needs Record Saudi Oil Supply as OPEC Convenes, there’s just one thought that pops into my head: what the world needs is for us to stop doing this thing we’re doing. Even apart from peak oil concerns, it’s obvious we’re going to run out at some point or another, and it doesn’t matter whether that’s tomorrow or at some other point in the future, though we do know it’s not going to take another 100 years, or even 50.

And nothing will ever take the place of oil; once those unique carbons are gone, that’s it, we’ll have to find a completely different way of running our societies, and if we’re not smart enough to prepare for that beforehand, we’ll be cats fighting in a sack and use the last scraps to kill off each other. And our legacy won’t be the Greek thinkers and Picasso and Dostoyevsky and Walt Whitman and Maria Callas, since there won’t be the means for our children anymore to share what makes man great between them. Our main legacy will instead be bloodshed, we will have gone the exact same path that any non-thinking or even primitive organism would have taken, who don’t have opera or philosophy or poetry to their name.

Lake Mead Has Dropped To Its Lowest Level Ever

Lake Mead Has Dropped To Its Lowest Level Ever | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

Millions of people in the region rely on Lake Mead for water and electricity generated at Hoover Dam. Unfortunately, as water levels fall, it gets more difficult for the dam's turbines to produce electricity. Engineers at the dam are installing turbines that could extend the ability of the dam to produce power, even if the water levels fall to 950 feet, but that's a worst case scenario.

Vancouver a 'critical' money laundering hub for transnational criminals, experts say

Vancouver is “emerging as a critical money laundering hub” for international criminals, due to a convergence of factors including drug money, international connections, an active port, and a hot real estate market, experts say. International criminals looking to “wash” ill-gotten gains in Vancouver remain a persistent problem, said Kim Marsh, a Vancouver-based financial crime specialist with decades of experience in law enforcement and private investigations.

Lake Mead expected to reach its lowest level soon

Lake Mead expected to reach its lowest level soon | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

LAS VEGAS -- Lake Mead's water level has dropped to the lowest level it's ever been. The lake has come down well over a 140 feet at its peak, and it's projected to recede even more this summer.

Experts say the dam hasn't been this low since it was built.  Lake Mead is the primary source of water in Nevada's drought-stricken region, but it's getting low enough where restrictions on how much water we can use may be put into place.

The low water is having a direct impact on boaters and even causing new dangers, according to park goers.

The U.S. Department of Labor wants to stop coal companies from withholding medical evidence from miners seeking financial benefits after being disabled by black lung disease.

The rule, proposed Tuesday, would address a major problem spotlighted in the Center for Public Integrity series “Breathless and Burdened,” which exposed how prominent doctors and lawyers helped coal companies defeat the benefits claims of miners sick and dying of black lung disease.
