Son président, Chistophe de Margerie, a déclaré au quotidien économiqueThe Financial Times, qu'il s'opposait au forage dans l'Arctique, et, plus largement au dessus du cercle polaire. Une première pour un groupe pétrolier.Dans le Groenland en particulier, "une fuite ferait énormément de mal à l'image de la compagnie", a-t-il affirmé. Celle-ci a déjà été écornée par le passé, notamment avec le naufrage de l'Erika.
