Pinterest adds Products, Recipes and Movies

Pinterest adds Products, Recipes and Movies | Susan's Social Media News | Scoop.it

Mike Allton's curator insight, May 20, 10:00 AM

BAM! Pinterest kicks products and recipes up a notch.

Have you ever watched Emeril on TV? Not only does he create awesome food, but his unbridled enthusiasm is amazing. And if you've ever watched his live show, you know that the most-anticipated part of every dish is when he "kicks it up a notch" - usually by taking a pinch of his cayenne-based special seasoning and shouting"BAM!"

The folks at Pinterest did just that.

Pinning cool products and great-looking food has been the staple of Pinterest since its launch in 2010. Now, products are going to include Prices, Description, Availability and better linkage to the source. Recipes will include Cook Time, Ingredients and Services, and even Movies get into the act with ratings, cast information and more.

This is awesome for us users, as we can find out even more about what we're looking at and make faster decisions. I know those Batman-inspired, platinum USB storage cufflinks look cool, but now I can see that they only cost $45 and maybe I can actually entertain the idea of buying them. Or, more practically, I'm looking for a great Italian dish that I can make for my family and now, at a glance, I can see what's in that great-looking lasagna and whether or not I can even get those ingredients, without having to click through to a website.

And for businesses? Whoa. Stop reading and click through to the story right now, because you need to get started on this today. If you weren't using Pinterest before to promote your products, that needs to become your top priority for this week.

So check out these changes, and I've love to hear what you think, both as Pinterest users and as businesses taking advantage.

Google Header Eats Los Angeles

Yes the Google+ Header just got bigger along with 41 other feature improvements to the leading search engine's social network. Recognizing that the most popular content on Facebook is pictures, Google+ boosted its ability to compete. Here is a quote from the Economic Times post:

"But the most compelling new attraction may be a new photo-management tool that promises to test how much control people want to cede to computers. It will also further blur the lines between a real moment in time and augmented reality."

James LaCorte's curator insight, May 20, 3:38 PM

I have tested some of the changes out. I like the look and feel. They need to work on getting the masses over there, even if it is for the communities.

I do think a little better documentation is needed.

Frisky business? LinkedIn evicts little-known 'red-light district' - NBC News.com

Frisky business? LinkedIn evicts little-known 'red-light district' - NBC News.com | Susan's Social Media News | Scoop.it
A run-of-the-mill LinkedIn user agreement update has revealed that the professional networking site has been an unwilling host to the...
Susan Daniels's insight:

I hesitate to scoop this but its the trending news on social media this evening. I must admit I am a little surprised to hear that there is a 'red-light district' on LinkedIn.

In my opinion LinkedIn has the been toughest social media venue to break into for an internet marketer. In the early days I received so many rude messages from so-called "professionals" on LinkedIn that while I maintained a profile - I did't spend much time on it. Everytime I did, it seemed like I was getting my hand slapped.

Now, I find out they have been allowing 'red-light district' and have only just discovered it? I'm confused LinkedIn. I'm a grandmother from Oregon. You were all over me and you allowed this?

According to this article, sinced this "discovery", LinkedIn is revoking membership to at least some of the 'red-light district' profiles.

Please know that I'm not judging these 'red-light' members. What they do is their business. That's how I play the social media game. I don't know what some one elses situation is or what they are going through.

It isn't my job to judge anybody on social media. Nor is it mine or anybody else's job to correct them based on 'whatever' morality based dogma.

I do have a question for Nevada though. If prostitution is legal in some counties in Nevada, why is it illegal to advertise? For logical thinkers, that's a bit of a stretch - isn't it?

On the brighter side of things...

The upgrades and new features on LinkedIn have made it more user-friendly over the past year and I now visit LinkedIn on a regular basis. I run a group there and get several contact requests per day. I enjoy the fact that many jobs sites allow me to use my LinkedIn profile to apply for a job. That's a huge convenience and I recommend it.

Susan Daniels

Susan Daniels's insight:

This is what I'm talking about.

Keep It Simple Sweety! (a famous quote by the late and greatest entrepreneur of them all - Mary Kay Ashley!)

Look how far we have come in a short 20 years. My goodness, they have flown fast by for me.

Can you even imagine where we will be in the next 20 years? OMG! Doesn't it give you incentive to stay as health as possible to see where we are in 2033?

We have 3D printers which is a mind-blower for those of us who watched Star Trek in the 60's and thought replicators to be some kind of fairy tale. They aren't anymore!

I'm still waiting for "beam me up Scotty". And, as God is my witness, I want to travel in space on the Virgin space craft. If someone were granting my wish - that would be my number one. Travel in space.

Keep your feet on the ground, your head in the stars and remember to dream a little bigger each day.

Facebook Wins Court Battle Against “Typosquatters”

Facebook Wins Court Battle Against “Typosquatters” | Susan's Social Media News | Scoop.it

A California district court has ruled in favor of Facebook in the social network’s case against a number of “typosquatters,” according to a filing released on Wednesday.

A typosquatter is the name for companies or individuals who purchase domain names like “gacebook” or “dacebook” in the hope that users will accidentally visit the sites. In this particular case, the defendants were sitting on many different misspelled domains which, when visited, would redirect users to other, sometimes malicious, sites.

The ruling turned over more than 100 domains to Facebook and awarded the company damages of about $2.8 million.

“We are pleased with the court’s recommendation. We will continue to use all the tools at our disposal to enforce against those who attempt to take advantage of the people who use our service,” Craig Clark, Facebook’s associate general counsel, told AllThingsD in a statement.

Susan Daniels's insight:

I always wondered about "typo-squatters". Early on in my quest to build and design social media communities, I noticed that when someone came up with a great idea or name for their site, someone else would instantly start using something similar. It didn't sit well with me - almost felt like someone was stealing from someone else. So, I am very pleased that Facebook pursued this and won. It sets a precedence and will benefit all "above-board" web site owners. Kudos once again to Facebook for leading the way for us all.

Warmly,

Susan

LinkedIn With 200 Million Users Worldwide

LinkedIn With 200 Million Users Worldwide | Susan's Social Media News | Scoop.it
LinkedIn, the social networks for professionals has just reached 200 million users. LinkedIn is in 200 countries and territories and available in 19 languages. This infographic captures the diversity of your professional peers.
Susan Daniels's insight:

I'm finding more and more things to like about LinkedIn. When I joined a few years ago, I found it too restrictive and ultra-professional. I dealt with "ultra-professional" at work all day and found Facebook more fun and enjoyable.

However, there have been many changes to LinkedIn and as I see the newer features come about, I am enjoying my time there more and more. I'm actually finding Facebook a little too restrictive these days...

It's kind of like the Oregon weather - if you don't like it, wait a few minutes, it will change. :)

Congratulations to LinkedIn on their 200 million member mark! Cheers and here's to many more successful years as the leading "professional" network.

Email & Social Media Marketing: The Powerful Pair

Email & Social Media Marketing: The Powerful Pair | Susan's Social Media News | Scoop.it

Business results are why we keep talking about, and using, email. These days, email is way more powerful when it’s properly integrated with social media, not seen as an afterthought or a channel to be managed separately.

If you’re into things like growing your audience, cultivating stronger relationships with customers, and increasing sales and ROI, then you’re going to love this.

We’ve teamed up with digital marketing maestro and author Jason Falls for a brand new special report on the subject.

Susan Daniels's insight:

As synchronicity would have it, I just came across this free downloadable without registration publication from AWeber, a leader in email marketing.

"Email & Social: The Powerful Pair digs into three key integration points, with real cases and examples to help you make your email and social media work together better. And it’s 100% free. Not even a registration form, just download it and put it to work!"

I haven't read this yet, but you can bet I will! As I stated in an earlier post today, I went quite a while without using email marketing. I thought the future was in social media alone. I have come to the awareness that the combination of the two would be spectacular.

So then, along comes the email in MY inbox from AWeber with the offer for this free publication, "EMAIL & SOCIAL The Power Pair". Enjoy!

Keep your feet on the ground, your head in the stars and remember to dream a little bigger each day.

Nicest Social Media Netiquette

Nicest Social Media Netiquette | Susan's Social Media News | Scoop.it
Susan Daniels wrote a note titled Brushing Up on Social Media Netiquette. Read the full text here.
Susan Daniels's insight:

Social media is here to stay. With so many sole proprietors, private and government businesses now integrating social media into their Web sites and customer service, attention to ‘Netiquette’ is fast becoming important for all internet users.

The term ‘Netiquette’ is short for ‘network etiquette’ or ‘internet etiquette’.  It is a set of commonly agreed upon social conventions that facilitate interaction over the World Wide Web.

This interaction ranges from social networks, blogs, mailing lists, and forums.

The use of ‘Netiquette’ predates the start of the World Wide Web going back to at least 1983, first referred to with the use of text-based e-mail from educational and research bodies who then dominated Internet traffic.

Listed below are a few common rules of ‘Netiquette’ when using social media.

Do not spam by flooding the Internet with many copies of the same message, in an attempt to force the message on people who would not otherwise choose to receive it. It’s a waste of your time. People dislike it and they will ignore you.

Do not take the privacy of your posts for granted. Never post anything that you wouldn’t want to appear on the evening news.

Avoid the use of all caps. Our human subconscious mind thinks it is being yelled at when reading all caps - in any language. If your content is concise and interesting, it will get all the attention it needs.

Having good manners is not a license to correct everyone else.  Take a deep breath and think about it. If you still wish to tell someone of a mistake, send them a private e-mail. Arrogance and self-righteousness are examples of poor Netiquette.

Ensure you know the guidelines and rules of the site you are visiting. Follow them. Do not argue with admins or owners. You will always lose. It's their site - follow the rules.

Common sense is the rule of thumb with netiquette as with all good manners. However, depending on the site you land on today, the guidelines and rules can change slightly or a lot from one to the other.

Take the time to read each site's guidelines and rules carefully. Look through all the features on the site and discover how you can best use the features offered to benefit both you and the site.

Not doing so can end up with a lot of wasted time and energy going down the wrong direction and ending with no benefit at all.

Strive to be cheerful, courteous and kind.

Warmly,

Susan Daniels

ZoomBoard enables text messaging from smartwatches | News | The Engineer

ZoomBoard enables text messaging from smartwatches | News | The Engineer | Susan's Social Media News | Scoop.it

An iterative zooming technique has been developed in the US to give keyboard functionality to smartwatches, wrist worn computers that give users access to apps such as email but so far lack text entry functionality.

Dubbed ZoomBoard, the text entry technique from researchers at Carnegie Mellon University is based on the QWERTY keyboard layout. Though the full keyboard is very small on a watch-size display, simply tapping the screen once or twice will enlarge an individual key until it can be pressed.

Capital letters can be typed by momentarily holding a key. A swipe to the left deletes a character whilst a swipe to the right types a space. An upward swipe calls up a secondary keyboard of numbers and other symbols.

Read more: http://www.theengineer.co.uk/channels/design-engineering/news/zoomboard-enables-text-messaging-from-smartwatches/1016194.article#ixzz2S7yVxblV

Susan Daniels's insight:

This is an excellent texting tool for those social media marketers on the go. Even though the watch is a small surface, tapping twice will enlarge the letters from the querty keyboard. For the seasoned "texting afficionado", this will be a no-brainer to learn the taps and swipes to be up to normal texting speed.

Have I told you the story about one of my grandsons who, before he could talk, was holding small flat toys and pretending to text using his thumbs? He saw his mother doing it from birth and naturally picked it up. It is a sign of our times! This is the same one that liked to wear the 3D glasses while sticking objects into my DVD player. He was curious. He wanted to see how it worked.

Susan
