Social media is a perfect way to extent the life of evergreen content, or give you ideas to refresh old pieces. Use networks like Twitter to link back to older content pieces that provide info that is still relevant (remember to switch up the messaging!). You can also fill content gaps with older content. Take a look at the social chatter happening in your audience – you may have an old piece that may just need a few statistics updates and new graphics to share.

An Introduction To 360° Video For Social Media Marketers

An Introduction To 360° Video For Social Media Marketers | Surviving Social Chaos | Scoop.it
Virtual reality has been an especially hot topic ever since the Oculus Rift first made headlines, and it looks poised to finally swing into full gear this year. Despite some delays, the ultra-hyped Rift has finally started to make its way into consumer’s hands.

Emerging alongside it are relatively affordable consumer gadgets such as the Samsung Gear VR, which make virtual reality more accessible than ever. It seems the virtual dreams of the 90’s are finally being realized and there’s no doubt the marketing world is paying close attention.

To be clear, this article is not strictly about virtual reality. Instead, we’re going to look at VR’s little brother, 360° video. Despite what some will have you believe, there are important distinctions to be made between the two. Still, they certainly fall into the same category of immersive, just-like-being-there experiences.

Via Brian Yanish - MarketingHits.com
donhornsby's insight:
(From the article): For marketers, 360° video represents yet another opportunity to connect with their audience in a more intimate way. As of now, the area is still relatively unexplored and creative new ideas are waiting to come to fruition. It’s an exciting time to be a marketer! Plus, this is just a first step towards true virtual reality. It’s likely that we’ll start seeing completely VR, interactive marketing as the tech becomes more and more widespread. And I, for one, can’t wait.

Slaying Goliath: How Social Will Defeat Search for Ad Dollars

Slaying Goliath: How Social Will Defeat Search for Ad Dollars | Surviving Social Chaos | Scoop.it
Relying on search advertising for bottom-of-the-funnel action is a tried-and-true strategy, but ignoring the spectrum of what social advertising can offer is a recipe for disaster.
donhornsby's insight:
(From the article): Many marketers are starting to increase their total spend and share of spend on social, while investment in search isn’t growing so quickly. In the fourth quarter of 2015, Kenshoo found that marketers increased spend on search 8 percent year-over-year. Facebook ad spend was up 50 percent year-over-year. A look at click-through rates shows why marketers are more excited about social ads. CTRs for search ads rose 17 percent year-over-year—and 64 percent year-over-year on Facebook. It’s not just Facebook. In November, eMarketer released a study showing that users felt that sponsored social deliveries via Periscope, Snapchat and Instagram were the most effective marketing tactics. General search results ranked No. 15; search ads No. 18.

How Social Media is Quietly (Yet Radically) Changing the Way We Buy Stuff

How Social Media is Quietly (Yet Radically) Changing the Way We Buy Stuff | Surviving Social Chaos | Scoop.it

The way people learn about products, evaluate them, buy them, and interact with companies are being mediated today by social media.

Via Pantelis Chiotellis, Disera Doss
donhornsby's insight:
(From the article): Forget what you know about customer experience

It’s no longer news that social media is everywhere. The average user logs in for nearly 1.7 hours every day, or 12 hours a week, according to GlobalWebIndex. By some accounts, millennials watch more YouTube than TV. But what’s easy to miss—at least from inside big companies—is how fundamentally social media has already changed how we spend not just our time but our money. While we’ve been busy watching cat videos, social platforms have quietly turned nearly every aspect of customer experience on its head. The way people learn about products, evaluate them, buy them, and interact with companies are being mediated today by social media. Nor are businesses themselves, for the most part, driving this shift; much of the time, they’re catching up to it. It’s one thing to see the stats on this digital transformation (and there are plenty), but it’s another to experience it firsthand when you least expect it—like when you’re shopping for a Roomba. Now, I’m an early adopter when it comes to technology, and I live and breathe social media at Hootsuite. But for businesses that are just testing the social media waters, my little Roomba saga may shed some light on how Twitter, Facebook, and other networks are quietly and radically reshaping the timeless march long known as the customer journey. To be clear, I’m definitely not a paid Roomba spokesperson, and this shift applies to far more than just robotic vacuums.

What Can Instagram’s Most Popular Pets Teach You About Marketing? (Infographic)

What Can Instagram’s Most Popular Pets Teach You About Marketing? (Infographic) | Surviving Social Chaos | Scoop.it
Trying to keep up with brands like Nike and Starbucks on Instagram? Consider this: There are four-legged friends who are way more influential than you.
donhornsby's insight:
(From the article): Marketo’s Ellen Gomes explained:

There’s a reason why each year some of the top Super Bowl ads feature animals, and that’s because it works to engage audiences. This year, some of the top ads included animals, for example, the Heinz’s wiener dog stampede, the already infamous Mountain Dew’s puppymonkeybaby, dogs trying to get Doritos, and a marmot for Marmot. One reason these ads do well is because of testing—brands making a big investment want to make sure they create an ad that resonates. Another reason that they come out on top is that having animals in your advertising makes it stickier and more memorable. In fact, Adweek just did a field poll on whether commercials featuring animals or celebrities were more liked and memorable. The overwhelming consensus? Animals.

Facebook Finally Lets Its Firehose Be Tapped For Marketing Insights Thanks To DataSift | Social Media | Surviving Social Chaos | Scoop.it

Twitter's firehose of tweets has long been offered as a goldmine for businesses trying to understand how to improve or market their products, and now Facebook will allow privacy-safe peeks at its treasure trove, too. Today Facebook launched a new insights product called “Topic Data” in the U.S. and U.K. with the help of brand analytics leader DataSift.

DataSift will charge analytics firms a fee for queries, who will then mark up the price and sell it to brands.

If brands find the data valuable, it could draw them and their ad budgets closer to Facebook. Until now, Facebook has largely been a black box inside a walled garden. Marketers didn’t know what was said inside. DataSift and Topic Data let them peer inside.
