If you merely want to stay in-touch with friends and family, then Facebook is essential. If you want to keep up with the latest news and trends then Twitter, Reddit, and StumbleUpon deserve your attention. If you want to network with like-minded individuals, then selecting a niche site based on your interests and activities is the way to go, such as the above cooking example.

Why Facebook Business Manager Doesn’t Suck

Why Facebook Business Manager Doesn’t Suck | Surviving Social Chaos | Scoop.it
Facebook Business Manager isn't as bad as people would have you believe. In fact, if you use it the right way, it can be a game-changer for your advertising.
donhornsby's insight:
(From the article): For the one man (or woman) show, account administration is not necessarily a concern, but if you manage a team administering your account through Business Manager, it is far easier than the traditional method. If you have a new employee who needs to be added across multiple pages and accounts you can do so very quickly by adding them to any relevant accounts they may be working on. Have you acquired a new client or created a new page and don’t want to have to go through the admin settings of each? Use the People and Assets tab in Business Manager to add them to only the assets they will be collaborating on and none of the rest. Projects allow you to bundle pages, ad accounts, product catalogs and other Business Manager assets into one folder and then share them all – in one click – with an individual. This can be a huge time saver.

Andrea J Ross's curator insight, March 15, 2016 5:12 PM
This article does an amazing job of outlining the different purposes, uses, and skills to utilize on each different popular social media site. These details are incredibly important to outline, because each social media platform requires a different way of presenting yourself and your company.

It's not enough to simply make an account for your business on each platform. A social media marketer must really understand the etiquette of each site. As the article states in its conclusion, you would never talk, act, and dress the same way at a shopping mall, at happy hour, and at an office meeting. Similarly, each social media platform calls for a different way of presenting oneself.

I especially love the fact that this article outlines the population's motivation for each social media platform. If a social media marketer can understand why the audience is on a certain platform, then they can better cater to them. For example, people go to Twitter to engage in conversations or to look for relevant news. The article goes on to explain to utilize this function by adding hashtags to your post so that it will be grouped with similar conversations.

The simplification of navigating social media platforms done by this article is amazing and I feel that this article alone could prepare anyone to present their company well on social media.

You Don’t Have to Be on Every Social Network!

You Don’t Have to Be on Every Social Network! | Surviving Social Chaos | Scoop.it
It seems like there are new social media networks released every day. But before you dedicate yourself to a new platform, ask these three questions.
donhornsby's insight:
This is a must read for those who are wonderful which social media platforms to be on for their personal or business use.

(From the article): I will leave you with this: Don’t go “All In” on new social networks and features. Explore them. Test them out. However, stick to what is working well for your business as you dip your toes into new social networks and features. Guru’s will tell you to take a chance and jump all in; however, until you have the data and confidence to know that a social network or feature makes sense for your business, it is not responsible to go “all in.” More often than not, that shiny new object will be a disappointment and cost your business time and money. Don’t catch shiny new object syndrome; it can be fatal for your business.

Facebook Video and Facebook Live: The Future for Marketers

Facebook Video and Facebook Live: The Future for Marketers | Surviving Social Chaos | Scoop.it
Facebook video and Facebook Live are the two main products that will attract the most attention from marketers, but not before they identify a person (or animal, for that matter) with a robust following to participate in an engaging campaign across either platform.
donhornsby's insight:
(From the article): It’s certainly an exciting time for both Facebook and influencers alike. As Facebook continues to develop and push creative ways for users to consume content, this social media platform holds a major advantage over other content consumption companies in the fact that it is inherently social–a user goes to Facebook to share YouTube content, not the other way around.

Is Your Social Media Content as Popular as You Think?

Is Your Social Media Content as Popular as You Think? | Surviving Social Chaos | Scoop.it
The easiest metrics to gather may be the most deceptive. Never confuse social media distribution with content effectiveness – Content Marketing Institute
donhornsby's insight:
(From the article): Social shares and view numbers are similar to email open rates or search rankings; they reflect your ability to distribute your content, but not whether the content itself achieved its purpose. Upworthy measures content engagement as “attention minutes,” and has even released sample code for marketers to adapt and integrate into their own platforms.

Meanwhile, Medium’s key metric is the similar “total time reading,” or TTR, derived from a number of data points including scroll positions. These are measures related to the activity of reading the content and paying attention, not sharing. Medium and Upworthy care less about whether you shared their content and more about whether you read it! We should take Twitter’s cue to become less reliant on engagement metrics such as share counts. Let’s stop hiding behind numbers that we know are flawed, inaccurate, inconsistent, open to abuse, and ultimately meaningless in assessing the quality or effectiveness of our content and social media activities. Let’s all agree to stop taking these various social media metrics out of context, attempting to assess one thing by measuring another. Of course, we must keep sharing, but we should never confuse social media distribution with content effectiveness.
