10 Awesome Free Tools To Make Infographics

10 Awesome Free Tools To Make Infographics | Surviving Social Chaos | Scoop.it

Maybe you want create your own infographic, here 10 tools to support you to do it. [note mg]

Information graphics, visual representations of data known as infographics, keep the web going these days. Web users, with their diminishing attention spans, are inexorably drawn to these shiny, brightly coloured messages with small, relevant, clearly-displayed nuggets of information. They’re straight to the point, usually factually interesting and often give you a wake-up call as to what those statistics really mean.

Who can resist a colourful, thoughtful venn diagram anyway? In terms of blogging success, infographics are far more likely to be shared than your average blog post. This means more eyeballs on your important information, more people rallying for your cause, more backlinks and more visits to your blog. In short, a quality infographic done well could be what your blog needs right now.

10 ways to use Pinterest for your business

10 ways to use Pinterest for your business | Surviving Social Chaos | Scoop.it

It’s the third-most-popular social network, which means you need to at least familiarize yourself with the site’s business potential.

Unless you’ve been meditating with some monks in Tibet for the last few months, you’ve probably at least heard of Pinterest.

The virtual “pinboard” social network exploded this winter and went from fewer than 1 million users to 150 million in just six months. The simple functionality of easily sharing and organizing photo and video content fulfilled the original promise of media-based social networks such as Flickr, making Pinterest a huge hit with users.

Many people are even calling Pinterest addictive.

Why Social Media Attention Seeking Drives Traffic

Why Social Media Attention Seeking Drives Traffic | Surviving Social Chaos | Scoop.it

What are the motivators and drivers that make us engage with social media with such generous endeavour, escaping from the clutches of TV to instead, check your Facebook or Twitter site, to post photos, write articles, make comments on blogs and shoot videos and post them on YouTube, all for “free”.

Social Media has provided us with the ability to measure how much attention we are getting online and therefore we now have the ”Quantification of Attention” that has never been measured so broadly and deeply. This attention seeking behaviour drives website and blog traffic.

Building A World Class Social Business That Delivers Stakeholder Value

Building A World Class Social Business That Delivers Stakeholder Value | Surviving Social Chaos | Scoop.it
A world-class social business should be built upon three pillars – people, process and platforms (or technology).

The people of the organization (employees, leadership) are the core of social business transformation.

The requirement here is simple. Organizational change needs to be a core focus for there to be any movement or shift in behaviors. Everyone, yes everyone needs to change and adapt the way they work, communicate and interact with each other behind the firewall. It’s not easy and sometimes it’s painful. But it has to happen.

Too often we forget that change needs to happen internally first before we can expect anyone else in the organization to follow.

In other, words, if I expect my team to change the way they communicate with each other, I have to first change the way I communicate with them.

8 Things Every Nonprofit Leader Should Know About Social Media

8 Things Every Nonprofit Leader Should Know About Social Media | Surviving Social Chaos | Scoop.it

This post is part of my ongoing Social Media 101 series to encourage leaders to learn more about social media and use it effectively in their work.

Last week, I gave a “Social Media 101 for Nonprofit Leaders” presentation at James Madison University’s Towards Nonprofit Excellence Conference in Harrisonburg, VA. It may have been the first time I’ve been in a room full of passionate nonprofit leaders who were already sold on the value of using online tools to further their mission and just wanted to learn more!

Although social media has been around for more than a decade now, many nonprofit organizations are just now hopping onto the bandwagon in full force. As the social media conversation has evolved, however, it seems as if a lot of the focus is on how to leverage (and measure) the tools themselves and not as much on building the capacity of leaders to use them in the first place.

Schakowsky moves to protect job seekers' Facebook information

Schakowsky moves to protect job seekers' Facebook information | Surviving Social Chaos | Scoop.it

In response to recent news of employers increasingly requesting job candidates' Facebook passwords, Rep. Jan Schakowsky, D-Ill., and Rep. Eliot Engel, D-N.Y., have introduced legislation that would protect Facebook users from having to provide this information.

The Social Networking Online Protection Act (SNOPA), authored by Engel and sponsored by Schakowsky, would "prohibit current or potential employers from requiring a username, password or other access to online content," according to a news release from Rep. Engel's office. "It does not permit employers to demand such access to discipline, discriminate or deny employment to individuals, nor punish them for refusing to volunteer the information."

The legislation would also apply the same restrictions to K-12 schools and colleges and universities.

Social media playing increasing importance in business

Social media playing increasing importance in business | Surviving Social Chaos | Scoop.it

During a media roundtable after the signing, Ms Carter explained that social media and analytic tools used within a company's private network can allow employers to track employee sentiments and discover possible areas of contention faster than through traditional means.

However, she acknowledged that many companies still hesitate when venturing into public social media networks, harbouring fears of possible customer backlash such as negative comments on the company's homepage.

However, she reiterated her belief that social media is the way forward for businesses.

"It is far more risky not to be engaged in social than to be engaged in social," she said emphatically. Gaming and running a business might seem incongruous to most, but according to Sandy Carter, IBM vice-president, social business sales and evangelism, they have much in common.

Social media has always had a credibility gap as a business marketing tool, they were created for fun but are now being used to market billion dollar brands.

It wants to be taken seriously as a grown up marketing medium but that is difficult when the CEO knows that Facebook started as a social platform to connect with your classmates at college and is used by his daughter to share the weekend’s party photos.

Social Networking Was Always About Fun

YouTube was started when the founders experienced difficulty sharing videos that had been shot at a dinner party at an apartment in San Francisco. It’s these frivolous origins that continue to slow the take up by serious people running serious businesses.
Despite the fun foundations of some of the largest global social networks, business are discovering and are using social media’s power as credible and highly leveraged marketing tools.

Executives see improvements in marketing and sales efforts, and market share gains as a result of well-planned campaigns...

Companies should use social media to create spaces for consumers to have meaningful conversations with employees and other stakeholders. Almost seven in 10 respondents said they had seen a spike in their sales by letting customers talk about their brands on social media platforms, even if some of that dialogue was negative.

This kind of approach builds trust and credibility with consumers, potentially transforming them into brand advocates whose value is immense, if difficult to measure.

Facebook will unveil new tool to “save lives” tomorrow

Facebook will unveil new tool to “save lives” tomorrow | Surviving Social Chaos | Scoop.it

What happens when you add life-saving capabilities to the world's largest social network?

Zuckerberg will appear on tomorrow’s broadcast of “Good Morning America” to unveil a brand new tool that “has the power to save lives,” ABC News said in a press release issued Monday.

What might this new tool do? We pinged Facebook for insight, but the social network is keeping its lips sealed for now. But we do know that Facebook has previously taken an active interest in using social media to help people in crisis. The company partnered with the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline in November to encourage its users to confidentially report suicidal comments posted to the site.
