7 Deadly Web Design Sins You Might Be Making

7 Deadly Web Design Sins You Might Be Making | Surviving Social Chaos | Scoop.it
People have different opinions about what constitutes good web design and what doesn’t.

Some people think your site needs to be super sleek with an up-to-date, modern design in order to get attention. Others believe that web design doesn’t really matter all that much and you just need a site that works and lets people do what they want, like Craigslist.

Both answers are right depending on which industry or business you’re talking about. But, how do you figure out what’s right for you? And, how can you make sure you’re web designer knows what they’re talking about and won’t make mistakes?

This post presents seven deadly web design sins you don’t want to make on your site. The good news is that they’re all simple principles every website should follow. So, whether you get a slick design or not, you still need to know about these design principles and how they apply to your site.

How to Improve Your Brand Impact Through Color

Now this is what I call advertising! Even though I study PR and will  be in the legal and event planning fields, I cannot deny that this article has a rather strong pull on me. In PR we care about how the public feels about certain advertising, and since I'm a rather intuitive person I can relate on how colour is important in pulling audiences together.

Melanie Birch's curator insight, November 16, 6:04 PM

Our minds respond to color. We automatically associate different colors with particular circumstances. Color could also influence our purchasing decisions, which is why many brands use this to their advantage. One way color can improve your marketing is by brand recognition. Color could increase brand recognition by up to 80%. Color could also make you stand out from competitors. Organizations will focus on logo colors in order to stand out from other brands. For example, purple has a better chance of standing out over blue. Color could also help reach your target audience. Women prefer purples and greens and men usually prefer blues greens and blacks.

These are some ways to choose your color palette for your brand. Black is often associated with luxury products and is a highly versatile color. Red can be associated with power. It also grabs people's attention easily. In face, it is the most effective color that marketers use to catch the consumer's attention. Green is the easiest color for the eyes to process. It can be associated with the environment, health, and good will. It also grabs people's attention easily. Blue is looked at as a professional color. It could also have a soothing effect. Consumer's often associate the brand as being trustworthy and safe. Yellow captures attention just as much as red. It is associated with confidence, happiness, and optimism. It is often used to attract window shoppers.

SEO Simplified for Short Attention Spans

SEO Simplified for Short Attention Spans | Surviving Social Chaos | Scoop.it
When my client asked me to explain the essentials of SEO in 15 minutes, I gulped and wondered, "Can it be done?" I gave it a try, so here you have a brief, but information-packed overview of search engine marketing.
donhornsby's insight:

(From the article): Search engine optimization. It’s a clunky term for sure. You can’t optimize search engines. In fact, you can’t even learn exactly how they work. These are well-guarded secrets.

What can you do? You can do the right thing to your website’s pages—optimize them—to increase the likelihood Google and the other search engines know where they are and what they contain, so it will present them as a recommended resource when they match a search.

That’s not all you can do. It’s ground zero—what you have to do. And though you need to understand what you’re up against to do it well, this activity, defined as “onsite optimization,” is the easy part.

The other stuff you can do represents the hard, but more meaningful part. This other stuff happens “offsite.” I’m going to explain.

But for now, to answer the question, I’ll say SEO means the things you do onsite and off to help get presented by a search engine and discovered by its users.

Six Tips for a Killer Hashtag Marketing Campaign

Six Tips for a Killer Hashtag Marketing Campaign | Surviving Social Chaos | Scoop.it

Does your company use hashtag campaigns? Would you like to get the most out of your hashtag campaigns? In this article you will discover how Travelocity successfully implemented the most successful social campaign in the company's history.

donhornsby's insight:

The success of any campaign is measured by its results. In addition to measuring social metrics such as impressions and engagement, Travelocity uses YouGovresearch to track brand metrics. According to YouGov, during the first month and a half of the campaign, Travelocity increased purchase consideration by 11% for key consumers.

This means consumers said yes when asked if they would consider Travelocity if they were looking into booking travel. They also led competitors in unaided brand awareness by 5% during the campaign; for example, when survey participants were asked what travel companies they thought of, Travelocity was mentioned first.

Many factors contributed to this success, but Steiger says it boils down to one simple concept: “Letting the consumer’s voice be the main piece, and letting our consumers inspire other consumers,” he said.

What Boomers And Gen Xers Get Wrong About Social Media

What Boomers And Gen Xers Get Wrong About Social Media | Surviving Social Chaos | Scoop.it
Social media was not a part of the business landscape when most boomers and Gen Xers hit their stride. But today, regardless of role, industry or seniority, being social media savvy is a major advantage for both personal branding and for doing your job better.
donhornsby's insight:

(From the article): Thinking real- and virtual-world communications are separate. You’re doing double the work if you think real-world communications are distinct and separate from social media. Translate what you do in the real world for the web. For example, create a pdf of the presentation you deliver to your professional association and upload it to SlideShare, then share it with your LinkedIn connections and groups. With every share, your brand exposure grows.

I find this to be very true, and since today's society is mostly all digital I can see how Boomers and Gen Xers have a rather difficult time integrating themselves into the mix .

My generation was raised around the time when the Internet and social media started to take flight, but we are also ruled by those concepts. Every job now requires you to be media savvy, even if it's a simple retail job. The world constantly changes, and among everyone, the Boomers and Gen Xers have to change with it.
