As early as 2010, Gartner was predicting that 20% of business users would choose social networking solutions over email as the main channel for communication and collaboration by 2014. With modern business growing more social in nature, that transition has come, and many companies are introducing cloud-based or internal social collaboration solutions.

 

Here at Wrike, we’ve long said that managing projects via email is not ideal; there’s a loss of context when information is consumed in fragmentary replies. There’s a tendency for duplicated information as multiple people respond to one email thread. There’s a lack of visibility into how a project is faring, forcing managers to spend time manually gather status updates from each contributor.

 

Project management and social collaboration software solves the email problem by giving users tools to stay on top of projects and make communication more efficient between team members. That’s not to say email is dead. Rather, it will go back to being used as a direct communication tool instead of a platform for project management and collaboration.

When I first heard of curating content, I thought the same thing. However, I quickly learned that this could not be further from the truth. Curating third party content actually does make you a thought leader for several reasons:

 

You show honesty: you show your audience that sometimes your influencers can write something or present something better than you. You can’t always be the best at everything, and that is OK.You can actually connect with said influencer by mentioning them on Twitter when you link to their article or content piece and get them to potentially follow you, thus building a very valuable connection.You build credibility with that third party source, and possibly attract more third parties that want to share the content that you create.Curating influencer content helps build your brand, which can lead to gaining a new audience that respects your thoughts.

As you can see, curating content does not make you take a backseat. It is an opportunity to build credibility with both your audience and your influencers.

When we started working on Scoop.it, we had a lot of questions on why we even needed tools for content curation. Some were questioning the purpose or the effectiveness of curation, others were convinced it was a valuable practice but challenged the need for a tool. "I don't need a tool to tweet links, right?" or what Julia McCoy refers to as Myth #10 in that great post. 


She does a great job debunking 12 misconceptions which are still quite common about content curation but which luckily are starting to die as content curation delivers more and more results and thanks to educational content like hers.

Find a ‘reverse mentor.’ Get that interesting new hire with the funny haircut to send you snippets to guide you through the digital world. Ask your CIO or CTO to suggest likely candidates, spend ten minutes talking to them, and select whoever gave you most to think about.

Be thoughtful about your team. Get your head of HR and commercial director to identify your top digital talent. Then ask, What are they are doing? Who are we hiring? Do we have the right roles and structures? Do we need a digital officer or an “innovator without portfolio”?

"But before you use those influencers to carry your message, or before you hand them a video or an image of something you want them to share,” says Samuel, “make sure that image and message is going to resonate with the lurkers, and the dabblers who they are sharing it with, because that’s the vast majority of your audience. And there is no point in activating influencers to spread a message that is going to fall on deaf ears.”
