Don't Worry About Facebook Instant Articles: Here's Why They're Actually a Good Thing | Surviving Social Chaos | Scoop.it
HubSpot's VP of Content Joe Chernov weighs in on Facebook's Instant Articles feature -- and why marketers shouldn't be worried about it.
donhornsby's insight:

(From the article): Ultimately, Instant Articles will prove to be a minor disruption. It will be confounding enough to cause some initial hand-wringing, but over time, will seem like much ado about nothing. After just a few internal discussions, a marketing use case is beginning to emerge.

Marketers should test Instant Articles as a distribution vehicle for posts with a short half-life, like “real-time” articles, newsjacking, and perhaps even infographics. In other words, saccharine content that’s produced for a quick burst in traffic but isn’t expected to nourish long-term growth.

donhornsby's insight:

(From the article): This will give the real-time power of Twitter that Google craves. The news section has been the best way to get real-time information for a while, but even then it’s not truly real-time and requires major publications to be the source of the news. With Twitter, Google will be able to follow trends and highlight sites that aren’t on the mainstream popularity lists. With the rise of citizen journalism and specialty blogs, this will be especially useful when events unfold and regular people find their way to report them before the media.

o they upload a few posts here and there, or they link their Facebook page to their Twitter account - which means whatever they post on Facebook automatically gets tweeted as well (BIG no-no, by the way - more on that below). Regardless, it's all driven by the herd mentality: "Well, everyone else is using social media, so I guess I should too."

But really, if we don't have a well-thought out plan of social media goals and objectives and benchmarks and metrics - which of course takes time - we're better off putting our energy elsewhere. We plan our payroll, our budget, our inventory, our meetings ... what makes social media (which is just a fancy term for branding, customer service, word-of-mouth marketing, advertising and PR) any different?

Here are three ways to stop wasting your time on social media:

donhornsby's insight:

As a big enthusiast for Social Media, I know that there is great value in high quality engagement. It's not a waste of time.

(From the article): You don't need to be on every social media platform. You're better off being awesome on one of them, instead of being average (or worse) on a few. Get in the routine of producing epic content and growing your audience on, let's say, Facebook - and then add another platform once you've mastered the first one. Plus, by spreading yourself too thin on social media, you could end up hurting your brand - even with loyal customers - by coming off as unengaging, annoying or socially incompetent.

INFOGRAPHIC: Timing Is Everything for Facebook Posts

INFOGRAPHIC: Timing Is Everything for Facebook Posts | Surviving Social Chaos | Scoop.it
There is no such thing as the perfect time of day to post on Facebook, but there are guidelines that will help page administrators fine-tune their strategies.
donhornsby's insight:

(From the article): The lifetime of a post in terms of likes, comments and shares from fans is highly dependent on the time of day. Posts that are published in the morning immediately experience a wave of reactions, which declines first strongly and then continuously until the evening hours. Posts that are published in the evening have a much shorter but more intense life. Reactions explode in the first minutes — much stronger than in the morning posts. But the activity ebbs much faster, as well. One hour after the publication. An evening-post has fewer reactions per minute than its morning equivalent, even though many users are online at this time of day.

(From the article)What’s also a little surprising is that just 28 percent of these CEOs have a public social media account at all, regardless of platform. That number is up — it was just 18 percent in 2012 — but it still seems pretty low considering how widespread social media has become over the past few years.

The study also found that more CEOs are participating in company videos, a nod to the importance of video as a marketing strategy for companies. (As we’ve written here many times, consumer video is on the rise, especially on Facebook.) More than half of these CEOs appeared in videos on their company website or YouTube last year, up from 40 percent in 2012 and just 18 percent in 2010.

Are LinkedIn Groups Worth the Trouble? 17 Tips for Success

Are LinkedIn Groups Worth the Trouble? 17 Tips for Success | Surviving Social Chaos | Scoop.it
Learn to create LinkedIn groups that truly connect you with your audience with these 17 tips from Content Marketing Institute’s community manager.
donhornsby's insight:

(From the article): What if my group isn’t working?

You may have a group and wonder why it is not getting traction or results you have expected? We have experienced that, too. First, if you aren’t following the recommendations we suggest, start. Then you can truly know you’ve done everything and it may be an overdone topic, a niche that doesn’t attract engaged LinkedIn users, etc. Sometimes the group isn’t viable. In the end, CMI discontinued the Intelligent Content Conference LinkedIn Group.

Don’t be afraid to close a group that isn’t working after you’ve tried everything to make it work. You don’t want potential members to find a group that has become defunct – its last post appearing two years ago and a membership of five. Close the group so it’s deleted from LinkedIn. When we closed ICC, we emailed members to let them know of our plans well in advance, shared the reasons, and offered alternative ways to connect with our community.

Conclusion

I am extremely lucky to manage a community of members who want to be there, contributing high-quality, rich insights. Our LinkedIn group provides a robust platform for professionals to gather and share content marketing advice. Members can trust that if they post a question, someone will answer – usually many people, all willing to share best practices.
