Your bank calls you to verify your recent $750 bill at an out-of-state Taco Bell, but you haven’t left town in weeks. You quickly contest the charge and request a new credit card, but when you check your wallet the compromised card is still there.

How To Write Your Personal Brand Statement

How To Write Your Personal Brand Statement | Surviving Social Chaos | Scoop.it

Before you write blog posts for the masses, before you apply for those positions, before you even set up your LinkedIn profile there is one thing you should do – craft your very own personal brand statement.

donhornsby's insight:

Do you have a personal brand statement? What is it?

(From the article): Stay authentic! When writing a personal brand statement it’s easy to get carried away and putting down what you’d like to be one day. The old “fake it until you make it” approach does carry some merit but don’t overdo it. Never call yourself a guru, ninja, samurai, expert or even thought leader unless you truly are one. Only your audience can determine whether you are an expert and you will know if that is the case. The aim of your statement is to inform and inspire the reader, not to scare them off with fancy titles.

Google is making a giant change this week that could crush millions of small businesses

Google is making a giant change this week that could crush millions of small businesses | Surviving Social Chaos | Scoop.it

"Mobile-geddon is coming. On Tuesday, April 21, Google is making a major update to its mobile search algorithm that will change the order in which websites are ranked when users search for something from their phone or tablet.

donhornsby's insight:

About 60% of online traffic now comes from mobile and Google wants users to have a good experience whenever they click on a mobile link.

The company announced its impending changes back in February, giving webmasters nearly two months and plenty of information to make the changes necessary to keep their sites from disappearing from mobile search results. But the update is still expected to cause a major ranking shake-up. It has even been nicknamed "Mobile-geddon" because of how "apocalyptic" it could be for millions of websites, Itai Sadan, CEO of website building company Duda, told Business Insider.

"I think the people who are at risk are those who don’t know about it," Sadan says. To him, that mostly means small businesses.

How SEO Actually Improves Content Quality

How SEO Actually Improves Content Quality | Surviving Social Chaos | Scoop.it
In spite of the many people that might state otherwise, SEO and content can actually be best friends - here's a look at why.
donhornsby's insight:
(From the article): Hey, I hate to point out the obvious, but without SEO, your great content wouldn’t get found. SEO should be a content writer’s best friend because it does all the things mentioned above. It helps you understand your audience, to use the right terms, to organize your content, to know what to write about, etc. Without SEO, we’d all be writing in the dark hoping someone stumbled upon our words. It’s time to call a spade a spade – SEO doesn’t negatively affect your content, it improves it. It makes your content smarter, gets it found, and helps you connect with the people you’re trying to reach. Without SEO, the content on your website might sound pretty, but it wouldn’t actually do anything.

The number one objection I get from Sales People about Social Selling is “Tim, with all the other pressures I have, I just don’t have time for this.”

donhornsby's insight:

(From the article): Finally I often get asked how much time should I spend on Social Media?  In my view, the world has changed and this requires us to change with it.  On that basis, 30 mins a day would be a good target. Yes this is a lot of time, but what worked 20 years ago might not work now.  Many Sales people I talk to work out what old ways they need to drop and find time for the working practices of the 21st century.

Can a good SEO strategy replace the need for a small business to be active on social media?

donhornsby's insight:

Both of these tools are useful for small businesses, but it is getting harder and harder to run a successful SEO campaign without incorporating social media into your strategy.

Your response to the influencer’s attention can make it or break it....

Influencers worth connecting with are those who understand the power of being useful to others, no matter how ‘small’ you might be.

Why Your Marketing Content is an Asset, Not a Cost

Why Your Marketing Content is an Asset, Not a Cost | Surviving Social Chaos | Scoop.it
Treating Marketing as a Cost... Could be Costly
Via Brian Yanish - MarketingHits.com
donhornsby's insight:

(From the article): Having the metrics to show results is essential to prove your content is a business asset. Your content is a tangible, living thing that is the voice of your business. It’s the best thinking of the entire organization. Companies who believe this foster an environment where all departments work together, instead of against each other, to ensure a consistent and cohesive message is being communicated with the world.

In order to look at content as an investment line item, it has to tie into your business goals. That means you need to think long and hard about why you are creating content in the first place. If you don’t have a clearly mapped out strategy for your content, you are just throwing it out there in hopes that the right people find it. You wouldn’t treat your other financial investments like this, so don’t do it with your content.

Unlocking the power of influence marketing requires a focus on relationships, not pitches

(From the article): The relationship-building starts by carefully selecting the influencer to work with (someone whose thinking and values are aligned with my brand). Next I would begin to interact with the influencer in a variety of ways: online and possibly face-to-face, as part of the process of mutually vetting each other. Then I can begin to integrate the influencer into my brand’s presence.

Now fast forward … the relationship has been built and is maturing, trust has been established and we are ready for mutual value creation. We are ready for an influencer activation.
