Who Owns Your Digital Content? Hint: Not You

Who Owns Your Digital Content? Hint: Not You | Surviving Social Chaos | Scoop.it
Most of us don't bother reading legal terms before accepting them. But did you know that don't own all the digital content you bought on Amazon or iTunes?

Well, the natural answer is of course “Me. I bought it.”. Wrong, Apple’s and Amazon’s terms of service only grant you “nontransferable” rights to use content on up to five devices. And while this does not really affect you during your lifetime it gets tricky the moment you are pushing up the daisies. As you don’t own the content in your account you cannot give it away, either. In an analog world it was your spouse or your children who came into the joy of your rare LP or book collection. Not so in the digital age.

===> Your heirs won’t get access to the songs, albums, movies or books in your library. <===

Longer Tweets Are Here: All You Need to Know About Twitter's 140 Character Update | Surviving Social Chaos | Scoop.it

Twitter has just made a big change to the way tweets work.

Via Jeff Domansky
donhornsby's insight:
Twitter has just made a big change to the way tweets work. From today, Twitter is cutting back on what types of content will use up its 140-character limit. Now, @names in replies, media attachments (like photos, GIFs, videos, and polls) and quoted Tweets will no longer be counted against the valuable 140 characters that make up a tweet. This allows for richer public conversations that are easier to follow on Twitter and ensures people can attach media to tweets without sacrificing the characters they have to express themselves. Twitter first announced this update back in May but didn’t quite confirm a date when these changes would reach Twitter’s 300m+ users. However, today the company confirmed the update has been rolled out.

Lazy Content Curation Is Ruining Influencer Relationships

Lazy Content Curation Is Ruining Influencer Relationships | Surviving Social Chaos | Scoop.it
There's a fine line between content curation and plagiarism and content creators are unwittingly sabotaging the influencer relationships they hope to build.
donhornsby's insight:
(From the article): You see, influencers are tired of having their name and hard work appropriated by brands they don’t know. They’re not flattered by your unauthorized republishing of their content, or by how you’re amplifying their ideas by presenting them as your own. Because I try to assume positive intent on behalf of the curator, it looks like many content creators simply are not aware of the fine line that exists between content curation and plagiarizing, or even stealing someone else’s content. With that in mind, I’d like to share a few examples of what not to do for your content curation, unless your goal is to piss off your favorite influencers and ensure they’re unlikely to want to work with you.

Unlike getting viral on social media, search engines can’t be pleased overnight.

Search traffic is stable, scalable and free.

Most users do most of their web surfing through Google. The explosion in popularity of Google Chrome as a web browser means that users won’t see other search engines during their content discovery.

Google probably didn’t lose its mojo. Neither will it lose its monopolistic market share, any time soon.

But, it’s worth considering other search engines, like Bing and Yahoo for your enterprise. This is especially true, given that they get a higher conversion rate.

Here are five important steps to creating a successful social media strategy in 2017.
Via Daniel Watson

Since we're all addicted to mobile devices, wouldn’t it make sense to tailor your social media strategy in 2017 to be mobile-first? 33% of shoppers do a majority of research on a mobile device and 49% say that they would buy more through their mobile device if the process was easier. Since the consumer journey is no longer linear and takes place across different devices, we should all make 2017 the year that we make our content, social advertisements and website mobile friendly. 80% of social media time is now spent on mobile devices, so not optimizing your social media strategy for mobile could be a huge mistake in 2017.

Consider this: According to Salesforce, almost a quarter of all adults online are on at least two social media networks. It’s no surprise that each social networking site is unique in its audience and content, making it crucial to diversify your marketing strategy to interact with your customers where they are in the medium that best fits the network. How to Use Instagram Stories for Business

How to Use Instagram Stories for Business | Surviving Social Chaos | Scoop.it
Learn how to use Instagram Stories for your business marketing.
donhornsby's insight:
(From the article): While I didn’t want to include any “do NOTs” into this list, I felt this point was imperative after watching accounts for the past few weeks. Do not, do NOT repurpose content from other social networks UNLESS there is a very specific reason. The funniest thing about this is that marketers are currently the biggest perpetrators and this is one of the oldest no-no’s in the industry! Why not? A) It’s lazy. Don’t be lazy. If you’re going to be lazy, fine – but have more respect for the audience who gives you their time and be lazy on your own. B) Why should anyone follow you on both networks if you’re simply reposting stuff? C) Every social network is different, has a unique culture, and expects that you can customize the content for that specific one. What is cool on Facebook isn’t cool on Twitter, etc. And don’t assume just because video is the common denominator that it means re-using is cool. D) If you can’t drum up new content to share on IG Stories then don’t invest in it until you can. It looks bad for your brand and credibility, so wait if need be. We’re only a few weeks in with IG Stories and it’s going to be interesting to watch how it will play out in the marketing arena, but these are the first steps to ensure a successful start for your business.
