How to Use Hashtags on Twitter: A Simple Guide for Marketers | Surviving Social Chaos | Scoop.it

A simple guide to understanding how to effectively use Twitter hashtags in marketing and how you shouldn't! [note mg]

Every time we host live webinars (and as this long list suggests, that is quite often), quite a few attendees get confused about what to do with the hashtag we provide. What is it? What does it do? How do you create one? Let me explain!

What is a hashtag?

A Twitter hashtag is simply a keyword phrase, spelled out without spaces, with a pound sign (#) in front of it. For example, #inboundchat and #ILoveChocolate are both hashtags.

What does a hashtag do?

A Twitter hashtag ties the conversations of different users into one stream, which you can find by searching the hastag in Twitter Search or by using a third-party monitoring tool such as HootSuite.

How to Fix Your Social Media Marketing Strategy

How to Fix Your Social Media Marketing Strategy | Surviving Social Chaos | Scoop.it
Are you viewing social media through a tactical prism instead of a strategic one? This 8-step, time-tested social strategy can fix that.
donhornsby's insight:

(From the article): Only after you know why you’re active in social at all, and how you’ll measure social media strategy success, should you turn your attention to the “how” of Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, and the rest. This channel plan should be distinct, in that you have a specific, defensible reason for participating in each (I covered this more in-depth in my post on 3 Rock Solid Questions to Guide Your Social Media Success).

When we’re working on social media strategy for major companies, the plan and the deliverable is quite a bit more comprehensive than what you see above, but it’s based on this scaffolding and thought process. I hope you’ll find it useful in your own endeavors.

Social Networks - Stop Chasing Friends and Followers

Social Networks - Stop Chasing Friends and Followers | Surviving Social Chaos | Scoop.it
I’ve been active on social networks since before they were called that: late 1980s bulletin board services, AOL, Prodigy, and then a bunch of places you might vaguely remember like LiveJournal, etc. I was user 10,212 on Twitter back in 2006. I came later to Facebook, barely breezed through MySpace, and have quit and rejoined …
donhornsby's insight:

(From the article): People take a lot of this very seriously, and yes, we should be held accountable to our words on these various social platforms. But as to whether someone is a friend or not because we do or don’t link to them on a social network, that’s a whole bag of silly.

(Don’t get me wrong: I follow my mom and dad and fiancee, even though I’m not doing business with them.)

Beyond that, you can pick and choose who you connect with and how. Some will see this as some kind of insult (you not following them). Be clear, straightforward, and warm in explaining that it’s not.

The flipside? Ruining your ability to use the platform the way you need/want.

Why it takes so long to achieve social media success

Why it takes so long to achieve social media success | Surviving Social Chaos | Scoop.it
Sometimes it seem like it takes a long time to achieve social media success. This post explains why.
donhornsby's insight:

Social Media success does take time. Persevere and you will be rewarded.

(From the article): So yes, the immediate benefit of social media marketing is awareness and that is IMPORTANT because awareness leads to engagement. Over time, that engagement may result in trust. And it’s not until we get to that point that we can begin seeing some cash coming in the door … maybe years down the line.

This is why social media marketing can be a hard sell to executives who are accustomed to the overnight results of advertising. Unfortunately, many traditional kinds of advertising present diminishing returns as people spend less time with newspapers, local radio, and network television. For this reason, it makes good sense to start moving up that social media sales curve now, right?

How to Optimize Your Tweets for Search

How to Optimize Your Tweets for Search | Surviving Social Chaos | Scoop.it
Do you want more exposure for your Twitter account? In this article, you'll discover how to improve the visibility of your Twitter account with SEO.
donhornsby's insight:

(From the article): Whenever you do a Google search, you’re creating a search stream just like Twitter does with Twitter chats. The only difference is that Google supplies a lot more content, and the change in the stream is much slower. Putting these two types of search together is a natural fit, especially since Twitter tracks keywords and hashtags in the Trends feed.

Although there aren’t many tools that can measure each tweet’s exact reach, it’s a factor in the authority level that Google gives your Twitter account. Posting retweet-worthy content, having high-quality followers and tweeting at times when you have the most followers on Twitter are the best ways to attain a strong overall reach.

The name of the game is getting good audience response to your content. All of these tricks are great, but they’ll never replace quality content. Always think of your followers first and SEO second. Algorithms change often, so make sure to always write for the humans reading your tweets, not the robots.
