10 Things You May Not Know About YouTube

10 Things You May Not Know About YouTube | Surviving Social Chaos | Scoop.it
Social media verse is full of some best kept secrets. YouTube is one of them. Yet when I think about cultural shifts enabled by social media, YouTube is the place that comes most vibrantly to mind. It's big, wide and deep.

In my last post I mentioned that the social media ‘verse is full of some best kept secrets. YouTube is one of them.

This Time cover from a couple of years ago (with the shiny mirrored screen) was prescient, but not quite enough… I’d cross that ‘You’ out and say ‘Us’. Hasn’t it felt that way these last couple of years? How we’ve grown a global collective consciousness?

Despite this cover, YouTube is not usually the first site that comes to mind when thinking about social media. I guess we take it a bit for granted while we wax rhapsodic about Twitter, Pinterest, Tumblr and Quora. Yet when I think about cultural shifts enabled by social media, YouTube is the place that comes most vibrantly to mind. It’s big, wide and deep.

Mature. Eccentric. Probably not what you think it is.

YouTube has its Own Language

Reddit: A Beginner's Guide

Reddit: A Beginner's Guide | Surviving Social Chaos | Scoop.it
Spend some quality time with Reddit -- you'll find it an essential resource, a self-correcting marketplace of ideas. Get started with our guide.

To the uninitiated, Reddit looks like a mess — text links, comment threads, points, upvotes, downvotes. At best, posts seem contextless — at worst, totally random.

But spend some quality time with “The Front Page of the Internet,” and you’ll find it’s an essential resource, a self-correcting marketplace of ideas that’s nearly impervious to marketers.

Simply put, Reddit is a message board wherein users submit links. What differentiates it from a real-time information network like Twitter is that the stream of content is curated by the community. Items of value are “upvoted,” and those deemed unworthy are “downvoted.” This determines a post’s position on the site, and items that hit the front page are seen by hundreds of thousands of people (consequently, sending boatloads of traffic to the linked website).

10 Social Media Secrets from the Social Scientist

10 Social Media Secrets from the Social Scientist | Surviving Social Chaos | Scoop.it
Value is the currency on the Web, and the more value you create, the more people will flock to you. It has been said give till it hurts and you will receive it back in spades.

There are some secrets regarding social media that I’d like to share.

I’m a bit of a hard-core social media user and I’ve been doing web and content development for many years now. Because I have been online for a very long time (pre-graphical Web), I am pretty attuned to what constitutes authentic and cooperative behavior online. There are things that set apart the altruistic contributor (check out this cool thing!), for instance, from the self-serving ones (buy my stuff!).

If you do nothing else this year, consider shifting your social media strategy to encompass increasingly pro-social guidelines. The more you give, the more the community will give back, but it needs to be done with a sensitive hand.

About to Publish A Post? STOP! Read This | Surviving Social Chaos | Scoop.it

It used to be that it was just us writer people that were responsible for publishing blog posts. But, my, how times have changed. As business owners, marketers, and social media mavens, we’re all responsible for publishing content on a regular basis. We publish posts to our own blogs to build our authority and search engine happiness, and we publish guest posts on other blogs to increase your readership and gain new eyes. With all the time we now devote to writing great content, we want to make sure we’re getting the most out of it that we can. And that means taking the time to optimize your content before you ever hit the publish button. Because search engine optimization always works better when it’s a priority, not an afterthought.

Before you hit publish on that post, make sure you’re hitting seven important points. They may just make all the difference.

Is Google+ a Ghost Town? 5 Reasons That Will Change Your Mind

Is Google+ a Ghost Town? 5 Reasons That Will Change Your Mind | Surviving Social Chaos | Scoop.it
Google+ is getting flack for low average time on site numbers, but what do these truly symbolize? And do they really matter?

So with Google+’s new redesign and several articles that have appeared highlighting how Google+ is “dying,” maybe we should reflect on what Google+ is doing right, with perhaps the pundits looking at it through the wrong lens?

What if Google+ never needed to be Facebook, but rather exist as something more?

So you’re on Google+, and you think it’s a ghost town because your friends aren’t on it?

Well, what if I told you none of that mattered?

What if I told you, you could see what you really wanted to see; interact with what/who you really wanted to interact with; and group those interests and engagements into categories and subjects?

Well here’s five reasons how Google+ can make you forget that your friends aren’t here, while still being amazingly useful, interesting and engaging. It’s more than a social network.

Facebook and comScore: “This is how to do social marketing”

Facebook and comScore: “This is how to do social marketing” | Surviving Social Chaos | Scoop.it

ComScore released a new study with Facebook today explaining “how social marketing works.” If that sounds to suspicious minds like the fox explaining how to guard the chickens, that’s because it pretty much is. However, the study does contain a huge amount of useful information for social marketers.

Here are some highlights.

You’re more popular on Facebook

Social profiles on Facebook routinely get more attention than brands’ own websites. The example comScore gives is Skittles, which had 320,000 visitors to its Facebook page in March 2012, versus only 23,000 visitors to its corporate website. And that’s just visitors to the brand page; it does not count impressions of the company’s updates in fans’ news feeds.

The clear message from Facebook: pay attention to your Facebook presence.

Facebook rolls out the ability to manage pages from mobile apps

Facebook rolls out the ability to manage pages from mobile apps | Surviving Social Chaos | Scoop.it

For anybody who manages a Facebook page, the big challenge has always been doing so from a mobile device... amazing [note mg]

Managing Facebook pages from mobile devices has been a tricky challenge for page admins, but thankfully Facebook has just started testing an app that will make their lives easier. It’s called Facebook Pages Manager and it is available in the app store now for some countries and is rolling out to everyone in the next few days.

This is an interesting move as it seems to be part of a wider strategy by Facebook to launch individual apps for specific features on the site instead of trying to pack all their features and services into one main app. This new app allows you to log in as your actual page rather than trying to access it through your own personal app, which had caused major confusion for users in the past. This was especially true for those in the unfortunate position to be managing several Facebook pages.

What do you use as your daily Social Media dashboard every day?

Most likely not Twitter.com I am guessing.

Yet, in recent months, there were a great number of browser extensions released, specifically for Twitter.com. They help you create a much greater experience right inside Twitter.com.

What I like best about this is that you are in charge regarding how many bells and whistles you are adding. You can basically fully customize your own Social Media dashboard.

So here are my top 5 finds you can use to make Twitter.com a truly powerful Social Media tool for you:...

Is Your Content Worthy of a Like, Share, Pin, Retweet, Google +1? | Social Media Today

Is Your Content Worthy of a Like, Share, Pin, Retweet, Google +1? | Social Media Today | Surviving Social Chaos | Scoop.it

This is a question that each person active on social media should ask himself a day or another. Have you ever thought? [note mg]

How many hours have you spent adding buttons, gadgets and widgets to your new blog or website? You research the right tools, share buttons, share bars, analytic tracking tools and more. You install them with a hope and a prayer that someone somewhere is going to use them.

However, unfortunately many business leaders find they don’t get used. The share buttons sit on their site with the lonely zero or default +1. Chances are your pocket book or wallet might be feeling a little lonely too.

What if you took the same time you spend on the share bars, share buttons and tools and instead first focus on something worthy of a share? I know it sounds like a crazy concept because after all it’s far easier to focus on the bright shiny objects, geeky tools and data analytics.

Trust me, I am a data junkie and could literally spend all day helping my clients dig into the heads of their target audiences with a goal of embedding their brand in their brains!

Is your content worthy of a share?
