Why Marketers Shouldn’t Believe Instagram, Snapchat Are Equal for Influencers | Surviving Social Chaos | Scoop.it
Opinion: Imitation may be the sincerest form of flattery, but in the case of Instagram versus Snapchat, imitation may also be fighting words.

- More than one-half of all social media workers use Instagram rather  than Snapchat.
- Snapchat had the story idea before Instagram did.
- 600 million are monthly active on Instagram.
- 300 million are monthly active on Snapchat.
- People would rather use Instagram than Snapchat.

In my opinion I think the apps should've just stayed the way they started out. Yes, it's a good idea but it's going to make Snapchat less useful which I guess is the goal. The thing with the story though is now it is going on Facebook. The only thing that makes Snapchat different is that you choose where your snap goes. If you post a video on Instagram then it's on so whoever wants to look at it can look at it.

I selected this article from Curatti written by Ian Naylor because it explains how to develop a strong social media strategy that works for your business.

It's important to build solid objectives in order to be successful in social media marketing.

Common Social Media Mistakes

While you can create a social media account and begin tweeting or posting this will not guarantee solid growth. I agree that it takes focus and dedication to get real results.

Naylor explains what to avoid and how to properly grow your social brand.

Here's what caught my attention:

  • Avoid spreading yourself too thin on too many networks. Focus on one and then move up from there. It takes time and dedication to develop your community.

  • Include the human touch in your accounts rather than just relying on automation or standard content. When people see the same messages they become bored quickly and move on.

  • It's important to include video as a part of your marketing strategy. People are especially drawn to this medium -- especially live stream broadcasts.

The live video feature for Instagram Stories that was announced last month is on its way, starting with users in the U.S.
donhornsby's insight:
When live video was announced in November, Instagram said: It’s easy to go live–just swipe right from feed to open the camera, tap the “Start Live Video” button and start sharing for up to one hour. Your friends may get a notification when you go live so they can tune in. While you’re live, you can pin a comment for everyone to see or turn comments off altogether. When someone you follow starts a live story, you’ll see “Live” under their profile photo in the stories bar. During the broadcast, you can comment and like as much as you want. You can also check out new live stories on Explore. Tap “Top Live” to see exciting live stories happening at that moment and swipe right and left to easily skip around.

How to Use Instagram Stories for Business

How to Use Instagram Stories for Business | Surviving Social Chaos | Scoop.it
Learn how to use Instagram Stories for your business marketing.
donhornsby's insight:
(From the article): While I didn’t want to include any “do NOTs” into this list, I felt this point was imperative after watching accounts for the past few weeks. Do not, do NOT repurpose content from other social networks UNLESS there is a very specific reason. The funniest thing about this is that marketers are currently the biggest perpetrators and this is one of the oldest no-no’s in the industry! Why not? A) It’s lazy. Don’t be lazy. If you’re going to be lazy, fine – but have more respect for the audience who gives you their time and be lazy on your own. B) Why should anyone follow you on both networks if you’re simply reposting stuff? C) Every social network is different, has a unique culture, and expects that you can customize the content for that specific one. What is cool on Facebook isn’t cool on Twitter, etc. And don’t assume just because video is the common denominator that it means re-using is cool. D) If you can’t drum up new content to share on IG Stories then don’t invest in it until you can. It looks bad for your brand and credibility, so wait if need be. We’re only a few weeks in with IG Stories and it’s going to be interesting to watch how it will play out in the marketing arena, but these are the first steps to ensure a successful start for your business.

What Can Instagram’s Most Popular Pets Teach You About Marketing? (Infographic)

What Can Instagram’s Most Popular Pets Teach You About Marketing? (Infographic) | Surviving Social Chaos | Scoop.it
Trying to keep up with brands like Nike and Starbucks on Instagram? Consider this: There are four-legged friends who are way more influential than you.
donhornsby's insight:
(From the article): Marketo’s Ellen Gomes explained:

There’s a reason why each year some of the top Super Bowl ads feature animals, and that’s because it works to engage audiences. This year, some of the top ads included animals, for example, the Heinz’s wiener dog stampede, the already infamous Mountain Dew’s puppymonkeybaby, dogs trying to get Doritos, and a marmot for Marmot. One reason these ads do well is because of testing—brands making a big investment want to make sure they create an ad that resonates. Another reason that they come out on top is that having animals in your advertising makes it stickier and more memorable. In fact, Adweek just did a field poll on whether commercials featuring animals or celebrities were more liked and memorable. The overwhelming consensus? Animals.

Myspace’s new design actually has people excited

Myspace’s new design actually has people excited | Surviving Social Chaos | Scoop.it

When advertising firm Specific Media bought Myspace – complete with investment from Justin Timberlake – it’s fair to say the most common reaction was a shrug. Dying brand, no chance of a comeback.

Yet if you thought of Myspace less as a falling social network, and more as (potentially) the largest music discovery site in the world, there was a glimmer of hope. Well, a video teaser of the new Myspace has fuelled that hope.

As one heavily-retweeted Twitter user put it: “Instagram + Pinterest + Windows 8 + Justin Timberlake = SexyBack”. It’s very beautiful, heavy on images, and light on clutter. Music remains a key ingredient too, with mixes, trending artists and songs, a radio option and a whole section spotlighting ‘This week’s Top Fans’.

Camera effects, such as masks and frames can also be added, in another nod to Snapchat's geofilters. Friends can reply to stories, and users will receive these messages in Direct – a space to have conversations with specific friends about individual photos and videos. Stories will not be posted to your profile or on the news feed, but instead will be displayed at the top of the app. This has been introduced with two other new features, Facebook Camera and Direct, in its latest update.

It just happens to be mobile only. However, that’s where the future is headed if you look at where consumers spend their time on social.

5 Strategies for Boosting Engagement on Instagram

5 Strategies for Boosting Engagement on Instagram | Surviving Social Chaos | Scoop.it

The first step in identifying such content is making sure you know and understand your audience. Who are they? What do they like? What do they dislike? What are their aspirations and lifestyle? What about content preferences? You’ll have answer all of these questions to truly figure out what content will rake in likes and comments.

The next step in crafting your Instagram strategy is to think about the value your content provides. Sure, pretty pictures are dandy, but they have to evoke emotional responses and provide some sort of value. Let’s examine some amazing examples of carefully crafted Instagram strategy that works.

Via Brian Yanish - MarketingHits.com
donhornsby's insight:
(From the article): Even though images are the main driving force behind Instagram, don’t neglect to craft meaningful captions. Often, those captions will add substantial value, context, and power to your visual storytelling. Take Humans of New York, for example. Images of regular people, not celebrities, achieve thousands of likes and comments because captions to these images tell powerful stories. I don’t want to degrade the quality or skill of these powerful portraits, but I’d argue that it is the stories that accompany every single image that have such a profound effect on followers.
