After writing my last post of a backup plan for heating, I came across a booklet on a similar subject, “Cooking without Electricity.” This well-written and well-thought-out document is part of the “Prep School” series by Ash Bauer available as Kindle books on Amazon.

“Without electricity,” by extension, means when the infrastructure goes down, so it assumes you won’t have natural gas either and must find your way to other forms of fuel. It emphasizes, and lists the pros and cons, of wood and solar.

Too often, we take for granted the wonders of modern life and fair to plan for what happens when something goes wrong. We'll have to plan for cooking quickly after the onset of a disaster.

While the hurricane surge protection system built after Hurricane Katrina stood up to Hurricane Isaac, Louisiana still has improvements to make, from expanding that system to elevating homes to survive flooding, U.S.

Katrina still provides one of the best examples of why we need to be prepared. Isaac reinforced that need.
