Long classroom or web-based training courses may accomplish the function of training, but rarely achieve desired retention rates. Instead of just dumping information on the learner, employees are expecting the content to be easy to find, relevant and digestible in the way their brains process information.

Other than domain flippers - does anyone who's not in the Top 500 really CARE about Alexa and it's easy to manipulate rankings? They used to be an interesting tool to dabble in, but their backlink and keyword data was marginal at best. Now with free accounts crippled, and paid accounts RIDICULOUSLY expensive - they certainly aren't on my SEO radar anymore.

The 21st-Century Digital Learner

The 21st-Century Digital Learner | Surveillance Products | Scoop.it

After hosting dozens of these conversations, I realize one thing: We just don't listen enough to our students. The tradition in education has been not to ask the students what they think or want, but rather for adult educators to design the system and curriculum by themselves, using their "superior" knowledge and experience.

Via Nik Peachey, Katja Kranjec
more...
Aunty Alice's curator insight, October 24, 2013 5:27 PM

Just as speaking is the outcome of listening, so writing is the outcome of reading, not the other way round. Listening to the student should also include "listening" to their writing. ie., analyse what they are saying and how they are doing it.  When students evaluate their own work, the teacher should listen and guide them to ways of improving it, whether it be punctuation, paragraphing, spelling, or word or subject knowledge.  This is how we bring students on board and empower them to learn.

Aunty Alice's curator insight, October 31, 2013 4:49 PM

Listening to students has two aspects; listening to what they say orally, and 'listening' to their writing which is only another way of talking, only through a code. Just as learning to speak is tied closely to listening to what is said and being exposed to words that help one to think better, so writing is the same  and relies on reading "or listening" to what others say and how they say it to express clear meaning. The two subjects, reading and writing, are closlely intertwined yet we compartmentalize them in the literacy curriculum. An example of adults thinking they know what is best for children.

What Are Subliminal Messages?

I don’t want to make this confusing, so, in short, a subliminal message is a message that passes under the radar of your conscious mind. Basically where the consciousness of a person would argue with or refute something, the unconscious mind accepts it as fact. If that still doesn’t make any sense, let me quote

MindFitHypothesis.com:–For example, if you were listening to a Subliminal Session for weight loss and you were able to hear the affirmations “I am Slim and Trim” your conscious mind would say to itself “What a load of crap I am fat and hate my body:. The idea is that since you are unable to criticize the affirmation when you can not consciously hear it, it is accepted by the sub conscious mind without comment or rebuttal.

Interesting idea - this could be useful in EFL teaching or just for people who are reading in English as a second language and need a bit of help.

I tried it on the Adobe Connect website to see if it would demystify some of the 'Marketese' though, and it didn't help much! A sentence such as 'Powering mission-critical web conferencing solutions, end-to-end, on virtually any device' is full of everyday words which are being used in an unnecessarily obscure way. Which is why I'm in favour of simply writing in plain English (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plain_english).

On that subject, I recently discovered the absolutely wonderful Simple English Wikipedia (http://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page), which does just that.
