Power of urine can charge mobile phones, says Dr Ioannis Ieropoulos | Surveillance Products | Scoop.it

UK scientists are claiming a world first in developing a way to charge mobile phones using human urine. The Bristol-based boffins have been able to charge a Samsung phone by putting urine through a cascade of microbial fuel cells. They have generated enough electricity to send text messages, browse the internet and make a brief phone call.

The scientists now plan to develop the technology to be able to fully charge the handheld device.

According to a secret accounting dated Jan. 9, 2013, NSA sends millions of records every day from Yahoo and Google internal networks to data warehouses at the agency's Fort Meade, Md., headquarters. In the last 30 days, field collectors had processed and sent back more than 180 million new records — ranging from "metadata," which would indicate who sent or received emails and when, to content such as text, audio and video, the Post reported Wednesday on its website.

For several years, traditional marketers have agreed to live with ridiculously low conversion rates for the placement and distribution of banner ads and email ads, with one template for sending messages to an immense target audience.

Traditional marketing usually needs substantial investment up front and large-scale placement and distribution, without assurance that marketers reach the most suitable customers.

In contrast, personalized marketing may be patterned or modeled from hundreds to hundreds of thousands of target audiences. Through a group of social media users, marketers can use social profiles and behavior data to tailor messages with higher significance, efficiency, and value.

This is a common concern of teachers who are new to project-based learning. Things can appear to be going smoothly -- students have been engaged by the project, they've been learning content and skills, they've been busy and meeting deadlines -- but their thinking is not as in-depth and their final products not as polished as they should be. If this is your experience, it's time to ask yourself some questions:

I am really interested in how to find out whether or not the students are engaged in the project. If they are not engaged, how do teachers alter their projects to make all students engaged?  I feel that project-based learning is extremely beneficial for students inside and outside of the classroom.  This article will be really helpful in my future classroom when I begin to have trouble managing my students' project-based learning.
