Barbara Delorme's insight:

Tom Curren is an American surfer, one of the pioneer of surfing.

His father, Pat Curren, (legendary big-wave rider) thaught Tom to do surf

By the time Tom was a teen, his depth of wave-mastery was almost scary. In the perfectly shaped pointbreaks in and around Santa Barbara, young Curren developed a style that would be emulated the world over.

The Best Of The Best And Beyond It

The Best Of The Best And Beyond It | Surf Competition vs Surf Values | Scoop.it
An interview with Stephanie Gilmore, from our December 2012 issue.
Barbara Delorme's insight:

This is an interview of Stephanie Gilmore about this title of wolrd champion.

This interview by SURFER MAGAZINE shows the "dark side" of surfing with the competition world and the surf industry (sponsoring, brands...).

There is no more "surf spirit" here, consumer society is nowadays everywhere, even present in the surfing world.

"The surf industry seems to have a separate set of standards for women’s surfing. The ASP has even allowed non-endemic brands to sponsor Women’s Tour events, but not men’s. Do you see letting the mainstream in as a positive thing?

Steph : I just think that the opportunities are endless for women—I mean, think of all the beauty products that women use every single day, and the fashion stuff and all the stupid shit that we buy. I think that the ASP are really going to push for that on the women’s side more than the men’s. And the industry might be more willing to let the ASP Women’s World Tour be endorsed by these non-endemic brands before they let the Men’s Tour do it, which is pretty interesting. And maybe that’s the thing that will actually push us to greater heights."

Craig Anderson - Quiksilver - Surf | Surf Competition vs Surf Values | Scoop.it
Barbara Delorme's insight:

Craig Anderson, just like Kelly Slater, is one of the Quiksilver team members but they haven't the same way of surfing, way of thinking.

Kelly Slater loves competition and Craig Anderson is a free surfer.

He prefers doing surf trips just to go around the world, make surf documentaries, meet new people, new culture, he don't care about competition.

Also, it's interesting to compare Craid and Kelly

Barbara Delorme's insight:

We found this video on the website "Surfsession" :

http://www.surfsession.com/2012/11/02/craig-anderson-et-la-france/

Surfsession is one of the famous surf magazine in France.

This video talks about surf localism (conflicts between local residents and visitors for access to large waves at surf beaches).

In fact, Craig Anderson, a free surfer, went in France during one of his world trip and he was insulted in the ocean by a man, this man fight him.

Craig was naturally shocked with this violent attack

Hawaii, Surf spirit : Portraits from a tribe | Surf Competition vs Surf Values | Scoop.it
Barbara Delorme's insight:

http://www.amazon.fr/Hawaii-Surf-Spirit-Portraits-tribu/dp/2842703553

We found this book "Surf spirit, Portraits from a tribe" in the university library.
This book explain surf's origins in Hawaii, values...

Here is an exerpt :

"The "Surf spirit" embodies a way of life, a way of being, which is the very essence of surfing, in which surfing is rooted. As the epicenter of the surfing world, Hawaii is where that spirit finds its deepest and most accurate expression? Seeking to capture this "surfing spirit" therefore means focusing on the identity of a peculiar tribe.

pretext to a deep relationship with nature and the ocean, surfing is not just like another sport. Extremely demanding physical and mental discipline, science of balance in motion, surfing, above all, illustrates a way of life."
