ReGenUC's curator insight, October 19, 2015 6:44 PM

It's important to remember that alcohol is the drug most commonly reported as being responsible for violence in hospitals. This story also provides an effective reminder of the importance of motivation in achieving successful treatment outcomes. If people don't want to stop using, they won't. Treatment services have a clear role to play in helping people build motivation to change and develop the skills to maintain that change. If proximity of dealers is an issue, people need to be supported to deal with high risk situations.

Opioid, Heroin Treatment Rates Stagnate As Abuse And Overdose Deaths Increase (USA)

With deaths on the rise, more money is being thrown at drug treatment facilities. Access to treatment is still a huge roadblock for many patients, however.

ReGenUC's curator insight, October 14, 2015 7:48 PM

'We found that 80 percent of people with an opioid addiction are not getting treatment...many areas have no access to drug treatment, and even if they do, the treatment center could be overcrowded or the actual treatment inadequate. For example, many state Medicaid programs prohibit the use of the two medications'.

While our treatment system is far from perfect, this is an indictment on the accessibility and quality of treatment in the US.
