Supply Chain & Logistics: Best Practices for Global Shipping Compliance

Supply Chain & Logistics: Best Practices for Global Shipping Compliance | Supply chain News and trends | Scoop.it

For manufacturers, managing a global supply chain often begins (and sometimes ends) with complying with 600 or more different laws and regulations that go into effect when goods move from one country to another. In a recent study of manufacturers, distributors and retailers conducted by Tompkins Supply Chain Consortium, respondents indicated that they comply with International Security Filing (ISF) programs by adhering to several best practices, including:

Relying on customs brokers to file the proper documents;Electronic filing online through a freight forwarder's website; Employing in-house custom brokers or consultants to manage the filing;Using a third-party logistics provider (3PL) to file at the time of shipping.

"Nearly three-quarters of companies are implementing technology solutions in addition to ensuring that their staffs are well trained," observes Bruce Tompkins, executive director of the consortium. However, he points out, only 42% of the respondents say they are taking advantage of international trade agreements and economic programs, and another 41% say they don't know how well they are using these programs.

Singapore’s sustainable packaging mandate is coming

Singapore’s sustainable packaging mandate is coming  | Supply chain News and trends | Scoop.it

Singapore's National Environment Agency (NEA) announced that it will soon require increased sustainability in packaging for any company that sells products within its borders. This requirement was born out of necessity, as the single landfill that handles Singapore’s entire waste stream is slated to be filled to capacity by 2045. This reality has lit a fire under the government’s initiative to become a Zero Waste Nation.

According to new research by Unilever, 33% of consumers buy a product because they believe it is doing social or environmental good. Plus one in five say they would choose a brand if its sustainability credentials were made clearer on packaging or in marketing. That equates to a €966bn (£817bn) untapped opportunity, according to Unilever, given that the size of the marketing for sustainable goods is €2.5tr (£2.1tr).

Coming up: what Parliament will be working on this year

Coming up: what Parliament will be working on this year  | Supply chain News and trends | Scoop.it
The biggest piece of climate change legislation the coming years is probably the reform of Europe's emissions trade system. It also represents the EU's first concrete steps to comply with the limits agreed at the COP21 conference. It could help to reduce emissions and encourage companies to shift to renewable or low-carbon sources. It should also help to prevent firms moving production to countries with lower environmental standards.
