Sunflower Sunrise

Sunflower Sunrise | Sunflowers | Scoop.it

Attract butterflies and have fun doing it with big, bold, beautiful Mexican sunflower. Plant it from seed directly in the ground and watch it soar. It can hit up to 5 feet in just weeks with big, lush foliage and smaller but still showy flowers in sunrise colors that butterflies love.Put a cluster of these bodacious beauties in the back of the border to give it height and drama. Many of the taller types need staking to keep them upright. Plant them outdoors after all danger of frost has passed in a sunny spot with well-drained soil.Middleton Corner, Ohio 453859-12-12Wallace Campbell Photo

First Peña Blanca Sunflower Project festival celebrates plant’s growing popularity

First Peña Blanca Sunflower Project festival celebrates plant’s growing popularity | Sunflowers | Scoop.it

In late summer in Northern New Mexico, along roadsides and in backyards and through cracks in the sidewalk, bright yellow sunflowers bloom. The tiny ones (two or three inches in diameter) are native to the region and thrive here, even in dry years.

The sunflowers in Peña Blanca — halfway between Santa Fe and Albuquerque in Sandoval County — are different. They’re bigger, 10 inches to 12 inches across, and they’re cultivated, instead of growing wild. About 35 acres on 13 different farms in Santa Ana, Cochiti and Santo Domingo pueblos and in Peña Blanca are part of the Peña Blanca Sunflower Project, which celebrates its first festival this Saturday and Sunday at the Peña Blanca Community Center on N.M. 22.

....

Sunflower seeds have many uses — they can be roasted and eaten, pressed to extract oil, and certain varieties are used for animal feed. Harrison-Inglis isn’t entirely sure what will be done with this year’s harvest (the quantity of seeds may be too small to send to a mill for pressing) but she’s no stranger to small-business initiatives. For years, she ran Sweetwoods Dairy, which made small-batch goat cheese to sell at farmer’s markets.

“As a gourmet food marketer, I’m interested in cold press, virgin processing [of the oil],” Harrison-Inglis said. “Sunflower oil has a dark golden color, and if you warm it even just a little bit, you can smell the aromatic nuttiness of the seed.”'

At the festival this weekend, Harrison-Inglis hopes to have cooking demonstrations. “Sunflower oil has the nutritional profile of olive oil, but unlike olive oil, you can heat it to a very high temperature without smoking it and without a burned taste,” she said.

'Eine Kleine Nachtmusik', Dorothea Tanning | Tate

'Eine Kleine Nachtmusik', Dorothea Tanning | Tate | Sunflowers | Scoop.it

This scene of a dreary hotel corridor appears haunted by unnatural forces. The oversized sunflower on the landing is strangely animated. A life-size doll leans in a doorway while the long hair of a girl stands on end, blown by the wind. These unexpected elements suggest childhood fantasies and nightmares, and echo elements of the Gothic novels that Tanning loved. The title, ‘A Little Night Music’, is borrowed from one of Mozart’s most light-hearted chamber works and appears to be used ironically.

In today's post, we'll cover the Sunflower family, Asteraceae. It was formerly known as Compositae, for reasons that will soon make sense to you. It's also sometimes called the Aster Family or the Daisy Family.

Asteraceae is a HUGE family (one of the largest), and food crops within it include not just sunflowers but safflower, lettuce, artichokes, cardoons, and Jerusalem artichokes. You'll also find important herbs and companion plants like calendula, dandelion, yarrow, chamomile, marigold, echinacea, tarragon, wormwood, milk thistle, and mugwort in this family. And many popular cut flowers are in this family too. So join me below the fold to learn more"

VanessaVaile's insight:

Another item for our Virtual #SunflowerFestival. You can tell from the tiitle, "Botany for Foodies" and its appearanceon on La Vida Locavore that this one is food related too. FYI cardoons (thistles) are also associated with Agreda in Soria.

Time for swamp sunflowers to shine

The star in Augusta’s (GA) gardens this time of year is the swamp sunflower. Swamp sunflowers come into bloom in late september just as most summer flowers are losing their glow.

If you don’t know them by name, they are the towering masses of bright, yellow, flowering plants that could cause whiplash the first time you see them. Just when summer flowers are puttering out, the swamp sunflower comes into its own in late September and into October. They will bloom until the first cold snap.

Cousin to local sunflower but the name alone tells us it is not exactly a desert plant not to expect to see any at future Sunflower Festivals

Sunflowers in Bloom in Dearborn

Sunflowers in Bloom in Dearborn | Sunflowers | Scoop.it

Sometimes, you just have to take time to stop and smell the roses. Or, in the case of Dearborn in late summer, the sunflowers.

Perhaps the city's most magnificent display of the beauty of nature, residents and passers by can always count on seeing a lush field of yellow each year when Dearborn's sunflower field blooms.

According to Ford Land, Ford Motor Company's sunflower fields are "an example of Ford's commitment to sustainability." The fields reduce maintenance costs for the company, as they are self-sustaining, while providing a habitat for local wildlife. To residents, they're also a beautiful way to ring in the fall season.

Movable mural, sunflower garden brighten Carnegie

Movable mural, sunflower garden brighten Carnegie | Sunflowers | Scoop.it

photo by Michael Henninger / Post-Gazette

Artist Harry "Hawkeye" Demel finishes posting a sign on the side of the Carnegie Historical Society's building, the site of a sunflower rain garden and mural that was made possible due to a $6,000 grant from the Pennsylvania American Water Company in Carnegie.

What is the eye-catching, useful and inspirational attraction that is drawing people, birds and bees to Carnegie?

It's a triple combination of a sunflower garden, a movable mural and a water recovery system, all on the westerly side of the Historical Society of Carnegie near Chartiers Creek on the West Mall Plaza.
Most people's attention is drawn first to the movable mural, a five-panel display bolted to the 116-year-old building's exterior wall. Four of the murals are of bright sunflowers...
