Garden art imitates garden life at Art in the Garden By Patrick Alan Coleman, Editor
The weather was just about perfect Saturday and Sunday to take in the sights and sounds of the Norwood Community Garden. While the experience of the garden on its own merits offers up a meditative, idyllic comfort as one strolls through the rows of maturing summer veggies, lingering amidst the leafy greens was made even more easy last weekend considering art had been added.
This year marked the fourth year of Arts Community Education (ACE) of Norwood’s annual summer art show. It also marked its third year in a garden and its second year in the Norwood Community Garden, specifically. It’s likely, however, that this was the first year the show had shared a stage with two unbelievably massive sunflowers. But the art was equal to the challenge, holding its own and even complementing the natural wonders.
Eight local artists, nearly half of whom are garden members, took to the plots to display a fine array of work in mediums as diverse as watercolors, oils, pastels, acrylics and pottery. Some of the art was tucked among the ripening produce-on-the-vine, some used the greenery as an ever-shifting breeze-blown backdrop to bold colors. All of it could easily draw visitors in for a closer look.
“Norwood’s Community Garden is growing incredibly, and plans to help ACE grow the West End Art Show in the future,” commented garden manager Lory Herndon, who was also torn between the sunflowers and the canvas flowers.
This bonus "daily sunflower" for #Mountainair's annual #SunflowerFestival includes a nod to community gardens and tomorrow's Garden Party.
The Labor Day Sunflower Project will once again transform the western edge of the Krutch Park extension into a floral paradise on Labor Day, Monday, September 2. The project will begin at 9:00 a.m. and end at 1:00 p.m.
...Knoxville residents representing each city district [will] weave hundreds of harvested sunflowers into a circular design on a freestanding, 15x15’ chain-link substrate....[The] Labor Day Sunflower Project began in 2007 as a creative means of uniting a single neighborhood, but it has since grown to symbolize the unification of all of Knoxville’s disparate parts. Each sunflower signifies the reward of individual labors while the circle embodies the coordination of those efforts.
A fine choice for today's #SunflowerFestival. There's a message here we could all learn from.
Today's "daily sunflower" is the #Sunflower Project, a #Mural Art Campaign for all youth in Canada to have their say about Human rights. With both a #SunflowerFestival and a community mural project, shouldn't #Mountainair have a sunflower mural? August 9, 2013.
If you've been out and about in New Cross recently, you can't have failed to notice the proliferation of sunflowers planted in June and July. The 1000 Sunflowers for New Cross project is designed to create a bee-friendly environment as well as to brighten up the New Cross Road and surrounding area. It has involved Grow Wild, New Xing and Goldsmiths (with some National Lottery funding), with the seedlings nurtured at Edmund Waller Primary School and Greenshoots’ community garden, among other places. Sunflower and other wild flower seeds have also been scattered on waste patches around the area so watch out for more blooming through the summer.
Time for the "daily sunflower" & another good idea for the #Mountainair #SunflowerFestival. There is a bee crisis…sunflowers can help

Lost amongst a sea of sunflowers, Britain’s largest grower is expecting a bumper crop this year.
Nicholas Watts, 70, has six million sunflowers growing as far as the eye can see across 160 acres, with his entire crop expected to sell for around £80,000 when it is harvested this autumn. He is the owner of Vine House Farm, in Lincolnshire, and sells the seeds of the flowers as wild bird food. The farm is Britain’s biggest sunflower farm

Today's "daily sunflower" is another Sunflower Festival. There are a lot of them. This one, named for the Sunflower River, started in 1988. As fond as Mountainair is of its own Sunflower Festival, we would not presume to "own" either the name or the theme. Indeed, ours is a relative newcomer to the field. We celebrate its universality. I may not get around to updating the "Sunflower Festivals around the World" page before August 24 but promise to do my best keeping up with the "daily sunflower" here and on Pinterest, http://pinterest.com/vanessavaile/sunflowers
