As the violent nature of the Israeli Palestinian conflict has escalated, this NY Times article monitors the major points of the last few weeks.  The possibility of 'Peace in the Middle East' feels so remote, and this Onion article parodies the difficulties of actually achieving this.  On a personal note, Chad Emmett taught the "Geography of the Middle East" course while I was at BYU and I've always appreciated his perspective; here are his thoughts on recent events.

Commerce knits the modern world together in a way that nothing else quite does. Almost anything you own these days is the result of a complicated web of global interactions. And there's no better way to depict those interactions than some maps.

Many ideological issues  relate to economics - and many economic issues related to geography. Take a look at these maps and see if they help you understand the global economy and where Canada fits in. Consider how different ideologies might view these maps and the data that they contain.

Pigskin Geography

Pigskin Geography | Summer Utah Geographic Alliance Newsletter | Scoop.it
Pigskin Geography is a 17-week program that motivates students to learn United States geography by tracking the travels of competing professional football teams with the NFL schedule.

Pigskin Geography is an incredibly dynamic way to teach the geography of the United States. Specifically tailored for 4-6 grade students, this program gives students a series of 17 weekly activities that are adapted to the NFL schedule that week. These questions do NOT rely on football knowledge, but uses this as an opportunity to introduce vocabulary teams, and explore other places. For example: “This week the New Orleans Saints will ‘march’ over Cairo, IL, going to their game in Green Bay, WI. Locate Cairo at the southern end of the Illinois. Cairo is located at the CONFLUENCE of the _______ River and the _________________River.”

This article really opened my eyes to what is going on in our beautiful country. I had no clue about most of the information in this article. I was especially surprised by  number six. I thought that wheat and grains would be harvested than anything else, so to find out that corn is actually harvested the most was a huge shocker.

GPS Activities & Lesson Plans

GPS Activities & Lesson Plans | Summer Utah Geographic Alliance Newsletter | Scoop.it

Have you wanted to get your students interested in doing geography not just learning about it? One of the best ways to engage your students in direct learning is through GPS and Geocaching.

Utah Geographical Alliance's insight:

Everything we know about the ways students learn bet indicate that if they are actively involved in the process they will not jut learn the information but they will remember it. GPS and Geocaching are fun easy ways to do this in a Geography class.  This  website walks you through how to get started with Geocaching, how other teachers are using it, and gives you lots of examples of lesson plans you can use  immediately.

The Newest Countries in the world

The Newest Countries in the world | Summer Utah Geographic Alliance Newsletter | Scoop.it

"Will Scotland follow the same fate as any of the other young nations in the world? Perhaps, but probably not. A glance down the list of the nine newest sovereign states below reveals that each situation is unique: It's hard to fully equate Scotland's situation with that of Slovakia, let alone with East Timor.

Even so, a glance back at history does show that the world's borders are changing more than we might appreciate: And the changes can sometimes take some time to settle."

Utah Geographical Alliance's insight:

An important map to look at and question for our students.  Whatever the future of food is in this country some things clearly need to change.  You can start your class off right by promoting healthy snacks in class instead of candy or doughnuts why not fruit and granola bars? Allow water but no other drinks in class. Also, promoting trying new foods from other cultures can help kids expand their food choices.
