Sukamto Sia Announces Concert with Park Avenue Chamber Symphony

Sukamto Sia is playing the violin in the Park Avenue Chamber Symphony’s spring concert.

Sukamto Sia's insight:

Sukamto Sia is proud to announce his upcoming concert with the Park Avenue Chamber Symphony. Sukamto Sia plays the violin and occasionally the viola with this well known group. The upcoming spring concert will feature the Spring movement of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, Mozart’s Symphony in C Major, also known as Jupiter, and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony Number 4. Sukamto Sia will be featured as first violin for Bach’s Violin Concerto in E Major.

Sukamto Sia has been playing the violin since he was a child, encouraged by his parents, whereas he is self-taught on the viola. “The violin is a beautiful instrument,” Sukamto Sia remarked, “but I do very much like the deeper sounds of the viola. I really just picked up the viola because it’s a good skill to have. Very few people primarily train on violas, though many violinists can play them.” Of the upcoming concert, Sukamto Sia said, “I am very excited to perform these pieces. My wife and children will be in attendance and I look forward to them hearing the full orchestra, rather than just myself practicing the violin at home. I’m sure they’ve heard enough of my little rehearsals.”

Sukamto Sia has been playing with the Park Avenue Chamber Symphony for several years now. When he first moved to New York in 1995, Sukamto Sia felt something was missing – he didn’t have much time to perform or practice while completing his Master of Architecture degree at Cooper Union. As soon as he graduated however, he joined a small community orchestra. About five years ago he came to the Park Avenue Chamber
Symphony, a well regarded group in the city that performs at highly respected venues such as Carnegie Hall and Alice Tully Hall.

“We’ve all been working very hard in preparation for this concert,” said Sukamto Sia. “From the sounds of the rehearsals, it really is a performance not to miss. We’ve really come together on these pieces and our conductor is just brilliant. He has conducted some of the country’s best orchestras in the past.” The spring concert is one of the symphony’s bigger events and will take place at Carnegie Hall.

Sukarman Sukamto Receives Progressive Architecture Award

Sukarman Sukamto is the recipient of the 60th annual Progressive Architecture Award, given by ARCHITECT magazine.

Sukamto Sia's insight:

Sukarman Sukamto is proud to announce that he is the recipient of the 2013 Progressive Architecture Award. This is the 60th year that the Progressive Architecture Award has been bestowed, though only since 2007 has it been awarded by ARCHITECT magazine. Sukarman Sukamto has been following the award through all of its previous incarnations, from Progressive Architecture magazine where it began in 1954, then to Architecture in 1996. When Architecture folded, the awards moved on to ARCHITECT.

Sukarman Sukamto considers his architectural work to be most influenced by such voices as Frank Lloyd Wright and Le Corbussier. “I have had such incredible good fortune studying architecture first at UC Berkeley and then at Cooper Union. These days, living in New York provides such inspiration. One of my favorite things to do is just stand inside the Guggenheim Museum and absorb the energy of Frank Lloyd Wright. You can just feel him there,” said Sukarman Sukamto.

Sukarman Sukamto is the recipient of the Progressive Architecture award for the work he has done designing new gallery space for small art shows. Tired of the linear perusal encouraged by most galleries, Sukarman Sukamto designed a space with multiple obstructions, forcing viewers to negotiate the space and actively engage with the work, creating new connections between pieces. “I just felt that we could do more active work when thinking about art. I took my inspiration directly from the artists I was designing for. This was sort of small press work in a way – the artists aren’t big names, but they’re doing great work and I felt something should be designed around their creative energy,” explained Sukarman Sukamto.

Sukamto Sia will officially be given the award at a small ceremony on May 20th. His wife and children will accompany Sukarman Sukamto, and he hopes that some out of town family members may also be able to attend. “I want to share this moment with my family. It is the biggest honor I have ever received in my architecture career,” said Sukarman Sukamto. The ceremony will be held in the Cooper Union Great Hall. Sukarman Sukamto is particularly proud to be accepting this award on the campus of his alma mater.
