Off and Running: 101-Year-Old Fauja Singh is The World's Oldest Marathon Runner

Off and Running: 101-Year-Old Fauja Singh is The World's Oldest Marathon Runner | Success Stories From Across The World | Scoop.it
In 2011, Fauja Singh became the first centenarian to complete a full marathon by finishing the Toronto’s Waterfront Marathon. His dedication, determination and passion for running took him to the pinnacle of success and fame.
Amanda Simmons's insight:

“What we can or cannot do, what we consider possible or impossible, is rarely a function of our true capability. It is more likely a function of our beliefs about who we are.”

Samantha Chan's curator insight, June 30, 2013 3:36 AM

This is my insight using see-think-wonder thinking routines. Although Fauja Singh is 101 years old, he is very passionate to running and runs marathons again and again. Teenagers and adults do not even like to run several kilometers, yet he is able to run 42km. He is a good role model for everyone and encourages elderly across the world to run and stay fit. He even did not keep the money he earned from running marathons, but donates it to charity.

RuiHan Chia's curator insight, June 30, 2013 9:48 AM

I have never seen or knew any century year old people being a marathon runner. It is just unbelievable. This Indian born British centenarian marathon runner started his first race in 2000 in London and continued participating in New York, Toronto and many others. He has already raised thousands of dollars for charity by running and has encouraged millions of old people across the world. He says, “One should stay young and enjoy life until the last breath.” Although, despite holding several records and reaching the feat of success, his accomplishments have yet not been recognized by Guinness World Records because he does not have a valid birth certificate; though his passport states his age to be 101, which I am quite skeptical about.

Yuddandi Sivasubramanyam's curator insight, November 3, 2013 6:40 PM

every thing is possible with strong determination.

Emily Lau's curator insight, June 28, 2013 5:12 AM

From this article I can see that providing people with resources for learning and allowing them to know and learn about the wider world through their own accord with the proper tools will lead to self-improvement through inspiration. I think that the 'Hole in the Wall' program mentioned in the article is really good and have a large potential for success as shown in this article. I wonder if this kind of success story is common for the children who used to participate in it by playing with the computers, it is easy to see that success is something that can be obtained by anyone as long as they have the proper tools however it may not be the case for all.

Success Story of Adolf Dassler, the Founder of Adidas

Thinesh Kannan's curator insight, July 1, 2013 6:05 AM

I can see that Adolf Dassler, the founder of Adidas, was from a poor family and worked really hard because of his passion. His father worked in a shoe factory and mother ran a laundry service. He has been trained as a cobbler from a very early age and he loved experimenting with innovative designs and ideas. He split up with his brother after working in a company together. I wonder why he would split with his brother as they had been working together for so long.

Gautam's curator insight, July 2, 2013 9:08 AM

I think that Adolf Hassler worked really hard because of his passion of shoes and sportswear. It also tells me that you do not need to be rich to be a founder of a major sportswear company.

Evelynkoh's curator insight, July 5, 2013 11:34 AM

Since young , i have believed in a saying that everyone born has a mission to accomplish and that it'll only be accomplished when you work hard for it. Its like a mission and that no matter where or when are you born , the mission will also have to be accomplished before you return to where you came from. Some say , passion , faith and hope is what pushes people on to step up and continue what they're doing and fighting for. You'll have to set a goal for yourself and work hard to accomplish it , find motivations along the way and encourage yourself to keep on going as you may never know what might happen next , you might be just a few steps to your dream, Nothing is impossible as long as you try, Learn from your mistakes and never make them again , learn from it and change along the way , make it better and when time comes , you'll never know how all these bits and pieces in life has helped you gained so much experience and memories that will last a lifetime. Work for your dream , you'll definitely succeed someday in the future, Never give up no matter how hard the road is.

Au Yeong Sok Mun's curator insight, June 26, 2013 4:41 AM

I see a man who had a difficult past and childhood. Even when he went into adulthood and tried to make a name for himself, he failed and became bankrupt at the age of 30. However, the unfortunate events did not deter his spirit and determination. Finally, he succeeded and had establish the Lancaster Caramel Company. He then sold his caramel company and created a new company after he went to a expostion about chocolate and created a Hershey Kiss using milk and chocolate. I think that this is a man who has a revolutionary idea and will not stop till his idea is fulfilled. Despite the fact that he had failed in his business careers and had become bankrupt, he still did not give up. but he persevered on and displayed resilience in his life. I wonder if his life would have been a great difference if his studies had not been disrupted so many times, and what if he had not gone to the exposition on chocolates, would we ever get our delicious, tantalisingly-delicious chocolates?
