Great Leadership: A Manager’s Guide to Crying at Work

No matter where you stand on the issue of crying, as a manager, if you have not already, you’ll be faced with a crying employee. The old rule of thumb was “there’s no place for emotions in the workplace (or baseball), it’s all about the facts, just the facts”. Managers, when faced with a crying employee, would either run away in fear or do something stupid or insensitive, or both.

So what’s a manager to do when faced with a crying employee?

Engagement in the Face of Adversity

Engagement in the Face of Adversity | Success Leadership | Scoop.it

I dodged a question …

I was asked a specific question on how to engage part-time staff. I gave a rather weak answer about acknowledging why an employee might choose to be part-time and working on developing their role within the parameters of part-time employment.

After the fact I felt that I had dodged the true challenge: how to engage part-time staff that is looking for full-time work when the company is not prepared to give it to them.

We can look at this part-time dilemma to answer a broader question: how do organizations engage staff in the face of adverse policies or unpopular business decisions?

Leadership lessons in how to fail well | SmartBlogs

Leadership lessons in how to fail well | SmartBlogs | Success Leadership | Scoop.it

I crashed my car recently. It was about 8 a.m. I was in a rush (what else is new?)
The good news is that I emerged totally functional (or at least no more dysfunctional than usual). The other piece of good news is that the experience taught me some lessons on how to fail well. It taught me that we need to think about failure as a process we go through rather than an event to avoid at all costs.

All Things Workplace: Presentations: Information or Relationship?

All Things Workplace: Presentations: Information or Relationship? | Success Leadership | Scoop.it
When most of us go to work, we live in two places at the same time. One is the brick and mortar building where we find offices, information, and work processes. The other is the realm of people, relationships, and conversation. One is a structure; the other is social.

Reclaim Your Creative Confidence

Reclaim Your Creative Confidence | Success Leadership | Scoop.it
Most people are born creative. As children, we revel in imaginary play, ask outlandish questions, draw blobs and call them dinosaurs. But over time, because of socialization and formal education, a lot of us start to stifle those impulses. We learn to be warier of judgment, more cautious, more analytical. The world seems to divide into “creatives” and “noncreatives,” and too many people consciously or unconsciously resign themselves to the latter category.
