Elysian Training's insight:
As early as 1996 Harvard Business Review was highlighting the importance of storytelling as a communication strategy. Even 20 years ago many books and leadership experts focused on the power of stories. Of course the art of storytelling is as old as human history and is the very vehicle we use to teach, connect and empathise with others, it is the oldest truly human communication strategy.
Some of the most popular business books of our time rely exclusively on a great story to form the vehicle for their message. This is now simply a ‘nice to do’ strategy, in fact Howard Gardner in his book An Anatomy of Leadership went so far as to say “A key – perhaps the key – to leadership is the effective communication of a story”.
So no matter what your role or function is in the workplace, mastering the art of storytelling is a critical communication skill!
