Blue Water Baltimore is working with CityScape Engineering and P. Flanigan & Sons to install a walkable educational landscape path and a rain garden while also removing over 6,000 sq. ft. of impervious parking surface. Upon completion, these restoration projects will treat nearly 14,000 sq. ft. of stormwater runoff, helping to reduce pollution and sediment load entering our waterways.
The average American throws out 4.4 pounds of trash a day. And then we put it in a big pile. And then the gas from that pile causes climate change.
In less than four years, San Francisco plans to stop sending any trash to landfills. Oakland has the same goal; Seattle, L.A., New York, and a few other cities hope to follow. A recent map shows how far the rest of the country will have to come to catch up.

“We see ourselves as primarily community builders and we do that through gardening – it’s a way of bringing neighbors together, often for the first time.”
The Baltimore County Council passed a bill August 1 to strip downtown Towson's current overlay zoning and replace it with a new district that will include a "more intensive design review process" to regulate all levels of development and redevelopment, according to a summary of the bill.
The bill requires development in downtown Towson to use "high quality building materials," enable "signature statuesque building at strategic locations," and integrate "urban design components into the public realm," according to its summary.
As landscape architects, we are often under the impression that because we love urban trees and seeing new trees planted, that everyone around us will love these plantings as well. Some city dwellers do in fact welcome trees with great excitement, but others may see the trees as an intrusion of their private space or territory.
"Before embarking on a large-scale planting project, consider reaching out to the citizens in your area to inform them when and where the planting will be happening, what it means for them, and what the benefits of city trees are. If possible, involving the public in the tree planting event may lead to an increased sense of ownership and civic pride, and an increased appreciation for street trees. When it comes to street tree plantings, communication is key."
Rennie Watson, teacher extraordinaire, shares with us the inspiration and drive to work with Blue Water Baltimore and depave 7,000 square feet of parking in Canton to create a community garden. Rennie Watson has always had her students digging in environmental science.
The green is a mammoth garden, a first glimpse for many students of what they could do in their own neighborhoods to improve their communities’ environmental health.
When we are kids taught about the circle of life. We have an admiration and fascination for the beauty of the world around us. There is a tangible love and respect. Somewhere along the way that is lost. We all have forgotten how imperative each living thing is to the next.
Most importantly bees pollinate anywhere from ⅓-⅔ of the food we eat, most of them our fruits and vegetables ... this creates an alarming decline in the foods available to us if or when the honey bee goes instinct. Whole foods depiction of their store without the help of pollinators is a good example of the impact.
If adjacent property-owners support the proposed changes, approximately a half-mile of Windsor Mill Road will be widened and sidewalks will be installed on both sides of the road in the next several years.
More than 800 golf courses have closed over a decade. Now clubhouses are going up in flames.
In the face of declining interest and competition driven by oversupply, course owners have gone searching for ways out. Some have donated golf course land tonature trusts and local parks, taking a tax break in return for preserving the open space.
Community Association will hold a meeting Aug. 17 to discuss zoning issues inside the Towson Triangle.
The proposal, the addition of a Town Center Core designation, or CT, would allow buildings in the Towson Triangle to be exempted "from any required front, side or rear yard setback, or any setback from the center line of any street, or any building height limitation," by the director of permits, approvals and inspections,
Nice photo essay - because the Chesapeake Bay is so shallow—its average depth is just 21 feet—and because so much land area feeds into it, the health of the Bay depends greatly on how the land is treated.

For the same reason that I don’t show my daughter’s face, I almost never show pictures of our neighbours here in rural Ireland. Many of our older neighbours grew up in a different world, growing up without electricity or cars, and talkin
In a more old-fashioned community ..you can see the bonds of support and obligation all around you. They temper your reactions, help you back down from conflict, encourage you to make deposits in the local bank of personal favours, and keep you from sinking too low when things go wrong.
Here's why the Bel-Loc Diner (and lots more) should be saved.
"The history of our community, our state and our region pre-date that of the nation and are no less significant than anything that may exist on a national level. If we fail to keep the things that define us as a community, then who will we become? The Bel-Loc is a place that is unique to its time and its community."
